Clint Black And Lisa Hartman Black Touch On Making Their 29-Year Marriage Keep Working

Clint Black and his wife Lisa Hartman Black are unquestionably one of the most iconic couples of the country music scene. In an industry where many relationships are measured in months rather than years, Clint and Lisa Black have managed a deep relationship for over 29 years. They took a minute from their busy schedules to speak with ET this September about how they have managed to keep the flame alive for so many years. We'll take a quick look at that interview while also surveying the Black's incredible 29-year marriage.

The couple recently presented at the prestigious Academy of Country Music Awards, where ET had the chance to speak to them about how they've kept their marriage going through good times and bad. The pair met back in 1990, according to Country Living. By chance, they both found themselves performing at a New Year's Eve concert in Houston, Texas. They gave from divergent backgrounds: Clint has recently released an album that would go on to cement the staying power of his career. In contrast, Lisa was better known for her acting prowess as the star of the hit soap opera Knots Landing.

Lisa was in awe of Clint when she first met him, "Once I met him and got to know him and then started learning about his music and all of that, and his poetry, I had to kind of forget about it when I was around him," she told Country Living in 2016. "I'd find myself looking at him going, 'You write all that stuff? Where does it come from?'"

Clint remembers feeling much the same way. He reminisced in the Country Living interview that, 

"Anyone would have been floored by her looks, that's a given. However, she was an incredibly pleasant person. I'll admit I'd never heard of her before, never seen her movies, but I did know she had some sort of a role on TV."

He is quick to wax poetic about his feelings for his enduring marriage. He went on to say, "My capacity to feel was deepened by her presence. Her life, her love, our marriage — it guides me. The struggle, however, was our fame. We had both come from very different backgrounds, so we had to decide what we were going to say to the world. Whatever it was, it had to be true to us."

Since their 1991 marriage, both Clint and Lisa claim they have never looked back or had second chances. The connection was almost instant for the couple. They had to find time to spend with each other in between their hectic schedule, but once they had a few days to themselves, they just knew. 

“He had four days off, and so did I, and they were the same four days,” Lisa told People in 1992. “It was like somebody was watching from above and saying, ‘Y’all need to be together.'” Lisa had admitted that she was nervous about spending time with Clint, but the nervousness melted away when he arrived to pick her up. “It wasn’t like I said, ‘Oh, God, I’m in love with this guy,’ it was just there he was and everything was all right,” says Lisa.

In a short clip from ET from September 2020, the couple was asked why their marriage works and how it is so strong after being together for 29 years. Clint responded, "First of all when you see her in that dress on the ACMs,", to which Lisa quickly responded with a small laugh, "This is why it works." 

Clint also added that, "We fell madly in love, and we nurtured and cared for our marriage." When Lisa was asked about why she loves her husband, Clint quickly interjects and jokingly says, "It's the same, it's my skirt," which makes his wife laugh. It is easy to see the deep love they still have for each other, which is suffused with jokes and laughter. A sense of humor is one of the best ways to keep a bond strong, after all. 

Clint said that he knew Lisa was the one for him very early on, and the couple wed after knowing each other for 10 months and 20 days. He said of his wife, "I knew intuitively that she could be trusted with my heart and my life."
