Christina Ricci’s 4-Year-Old Daughter Spotted Her in a Movie & What She Said About It Stopped Everyone

Casper is currently the seventh most-watched film on a major streaming platform. Christina Ricci knows this because her 4-year-old daughter Cleopatra pointed at the screen and said: “Mommy, that’s your face.”
Ricci, 46, shared the story at a Clarins event in Austin, Texas on October 24, 2026, and the account she gave of what followed is one of those parenting moments that does not resolve cleanly.
“I think she saw me on Disney+, like Casper’s No. 7 movie right now,” Ricci told PEOPLE. “And so she was like, ‘Mommy, that’s your face.’ And we had to have a conversation with her about why.”
Cleo has not yet watched Casper — or any of Ricci’s films. “But we’ll see,” Ricci said.
Ricci’s 13-year-old son Freddie, from her first marriage to James Heerdegen, has full knowledge of his mother’s career. The experience with her older child has prepared her for some of the territory, but the Casper conversation with a 4-year-old who is simultaneously discovering that her mother is on television and developing a very firm sense of her own identity presented its own specific challenges.
That identity has been on display for some time. Cleo, as Ricci has described across several PEOPLE interviews this year, refuses to be called cute. “If you tell her she’s cute, she’ll say, ‘I’m not cute. I’m Cleo.’” When Ricci herself once told Cleo she was cute, the response was immediate: “F--- you, Mom.”
Ricci described both incidents as “so important” — not the language, but the underlying impulse. “We are who we are and we don’t need to be defined in these other ways,” she said. Cleo is 4. She has already figured out something it takes most people considerably longer.

Ricci’s relationship with Casper has always been complicated. The film was released in 1995, when she was 15, and has become one of the defining artifacts of her public image — the one title most people mention first when her name comes up, alongside Wednesday Addams. That cultural weight has not always sat comfortably.
“If you actually watch Casper, I’m terrible,” she told Marc Maron’s WTF podcast in 2022. “People get so upset when I say that. It’s a childhood treasure to people, but I am terrible in it.” She has noted that when she first showed the film to Freddie, he had questions she was not prepared for. “He started asking me about my childhood with my best friend, the ghost,” she told PEOPLE in 2018.
The Walk of Fame ceremony she received in 2025 brought the Casper chapter back into public focus — she joked, entirely in character, that she planned to haunt her star after she died. “I’ll just always be here,” she said. The line landed as well as anything she has delivered on screen.
She has built a second act in Hollywood that is entirely her own — “Yellowjackets,” the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a family, a 4-year-old who corrects adults about who she is. The Casper recognition was coming whether she wanted it to or not. The conversation it required with Cleo appears to have gone exactly as anyone would have predicted.
Cleo saw her mother’s face on the screen. She wanted to know why. They talked about it. She still hasn’t seen the film. She will, presumably, when she is ready. And she will have opinions.
