Christie Brinkley Breaks Her Silence On Ex-Husband Billy Joel’s Health After Brain Disorder Diagnosis

May 04, 2026 by apost team

Billy Joel has been out of the spotlight for a while — and for good reason. The singer behind “Piano Man” and decades of sold-out concerts was diagnosed in late May 2025 with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain disorder caused by a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid that puts pressure on the brain and affects balance, hearing and vision. The diagnosis forced him to cancel all his scheduled concert dates, including appearances that had been rescheduled through July 2026, and step away from performing entirely.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH, is a condition most commonly diagnosed in adults over 70. It can cause problems with walking, cognitive function and bladder control and is sometimes mistaken for Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease because of its overlapping symptoms. Unlike those conditions, however, NPH is treatable — and in many cases reversible — if caught early. Treatment typically involves physical therapy or a surgical procedure to implant a shunt that drains excess fluid from the brain.

Joel, born May 9, 1949, was candid with fans from the start. In a statement shared online in May 2025, he said the condition had been exacerbated by recent concert performances and that his doctors had advised him not to perform during his recovery.

“My health must come first,” he said. “I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans.” In July 2025, he followed up with a more personal message, telling fans not to worry. “It was scary, but I’m okay. I know a lot of people are worried about me, but I’m okay. Don’t worry about me being deathly ill or anything,” he said.

Nearly a year on, a familiar face has offered an encouraging update.

The update came from an unexpected but fitting source. Christie Brinkley, born Feb. 2, 1954, who was married to Joel from 1985 to 1994, spoke to Hello! Magazine at the City Harvest 2026 Benefit Gala in New York City on April 21, 2026. Her message was simple and direct:

“He’s doing very well.”

The two share a daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, born Dec. 29, 1985, who has been one of her father’s most vocal sources of support throughout his health battle. When Joel first went public with his diagnosis, Alexa took to social media to reassure fans.

“My dad is the strongest and most resilient man I’ve ever known,” she wrote at the time. “We love you and we got you, Pop.”

That support translated into something deeply personal in March 2026, when Alexa performed her father’s song “This Night” at a tribute concert held in his honor at Carnegie Hall on March 12, 2026. Brinkley spoke warmly about the moment.

“She was so excited to be able to perform for him,” she told Hello! Magazine. “I was out of town, but otherwise it was so wonderful.”

Joel also shares daughters Della Rose, born Oct. 12, 2015, and Remy Anne, born Oct. 3, 2017, with his former wife Alexis Roderick. The family’s continued presence throughout his recovery has been a consistent theme in the updates that emerged over the past year.

For fans who have followed every development since that May 2025 diagnosis, Brinkley’s three-word update carries real weight. The road has been long, and the silence has been pronounced. But by every account available, the “Piano Man” is headed in the right direction.
