Chrissy Teigen Reflects On Her Sobriety Journey After Hitting Milestone 365-Day Mark

For years now, Chrissy Teigen has been open and public about her love-hate relationship with alcohol. The model and cookbook author, most notably married to crooner John Legend, has been charting her ambitions of reaching sobriety since as far back as 2013. While she had not quite reached her goals back then, in 2017, she again expressed her desire to put the bottle down. Again, she never hit that target, although several distressing events, including a miscarriage in 2020 and public backlash over old tweets that saw her flirt with joining the “cancel club.”

At the height of the drama, tweets by the model from 2011 onwards were unearthed and showed a new side to the once-spunky and vivacious Teigen, who had been dubbed the unofficial queen of Twitter previously for her clever and spicy remarks. The tweets purported to show Teigen cyberbullying model and TV personality, Courtney Stodden, back when the latter was only a teenager. Following the resurfacing of the tweets, Teigen faced immense backlash, going so far as to lose all her promotions and get dropped as a representative of a few companies.

In a lengthy statement posted on Instagram on July 14, 2021, Teigen spoke about her mental health status at the time and elaborated on how difficult it had been to manage herself through the circumstances. She wrote that “however I’m handling this now isn’t the right answer. I feel lost and need to find my place again, I need to snap out of this.” Later that same year, she revealed on "Today" that the fallout from the scandal was one of the reasons she had decided to get sober.

Back in 2017, Teigen had unflinchingly admitted how much of a problem alcohol was for her. She told Cosmopolitan her family had a history of alcohol abuse and that she wasn’t the type who could “just have one drink.”

“I was, point blank, just drinking too much,” Teigen admitted, before she added that she was “used to being in hair and makeup and having a glass of wine. Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show. And then a bunch at the awards show. And then I felt bad for making kind of an a** of myself to people that I really respected. And that feeling, there's just nothing like that. You feel horrible. It's not a good look for me, for John, for anybody.”

She added she “used to think it was kind of nutty to have to go totally sober but now I get it. I don't want to be that person. … I have to fix myself.”

After multiple attempts at sobriety and falling on and off the wagon, Teigen finally made it to 50 days sober. She marked the milestone in an Instagram post in September 2021, where she wrote: “Today is my 50-day sobriety streak! it should be nearly a year but I had a few (wine) hiccups in the road. this is my longest streak yet! I still dunno if I’ll never drink again but I do know it no longer serves me in ANY way. I don’t get more fun, I don’t dance, I don’t get relaxed. I get sick, fall asleep and wake up sick, having missed what was probably a fun night.”

When Teigen hit her 100-day sober mark, she went on "Today " to express her excitement.

“I'm actually a hundred days sober today and I'm so excited," Teigen said. "I feel so good, I feel very clear-headed. I feel like I've done the work and I just hope these people can forgive and be able to welcome the fact that hopefully, they've seen me be better.”

She also added she no longer wanted to feel like an embarrassment, as she said: “I don't want to be waking up in the morning and being like, 'Oh, what did I say?' Like that's so embarrassing and then it was just not worth it.”

More than six months later, the author of the cookbook "Cravings: All Together" accomplished her biggest feat yet on her sobriety journey: she hit the one-year mark.

“Not a drop of alcohol in 365 days!” she posted on Instagram on July 18, 2022. “I miss feeling loopy and carefree sometimes, but to be honest toward the end, it didn’t give that fun feeling anymore anyhow,” she added.

She then went on to describe moments of her life that she had, in essence, robbed herself of fully enjoying because of her alcohol crutch.

“Sometimes I get really frustrated looking back on days I should remember way better than I do because of alcohol. … Wish I remembered really any awards show lol. There are pictures from huge moments in life where my eyes just look … gone,” she continued.

“While I honestly STILL don’t know if I’ll never have a drink again, I do know I never want to be that way again. And for now, none is best. I’ll let the bad dreams come up and try to sort them out in therapy, without booze.”
