Chris Cuomo And His Spouse Cristina Are A Power Couple In Their Careers & At Home

With years in politics and media, the Cuomo family have established themselves as de-facto New York royalty. With two NY governors and one very famous TV host in the brood, it's no surprise that the Cuomos have become one of the most famous families in America. The latter, Chris Cuomo, has become a beloved figure for CNN viewers as a veteran on the TV channel. What you might not have known, however, is that his wife of almost two decades, Cristina Cuomo, has built a successful career in media of her own.

Before marrying Chris Cuomo, little was known about the magazine editor, Cristina Geeven. Born to a Brazilian mother and German father in New York, Cristina grew up watching Mario Cuomo – Chris Cuomo's famous late father – on the evening news. An avid writer since childhood, Cristina pursued her passion and began writing at various magazines after graduating from Cornell. In 1998, then an editor of the 'Manhattan File' magazine, she attended an art opening in NYC. That night, she met her future husband, Chris.

"[The Cuomos] are all very driven and, you know, doing things that really go above and beyond community service," Cristina told Elle. “So I met Chris and instantly was enamored with his whole civic-mindedness.”

The two fell in love and dated for three years before finally tying the knot in November 2001. According to New York Daily News, Cristina and Chris married in a lavish Catholic ceremony that took place at the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church in Southampton, Long Island. Word has it that the bride was even half an hour late to her big entrance as she fussed on getting her custom Oscar de la Renta gown absolutely perfect. Mario Cuomo humorously addressed Cristina's delay to reporters, as he said, "I’m waiting for the bride. If she doesn’t show up, you’ll really have a great story."

Cristina eventually showed up in her lacy white gown and holding a minimalistic bouquet of red roses.

"If this match between Chris and Cristina is not made in heaven, it’s certainly made in the vicinity near heaven," Mario Cuomo added. "They are both bright, sincere and intelligent people."

She might have married into the Cuomo family, but Cristina has built her own impressive career as a media journalist. In a 2014 interview with Politico, she admitted that being married to the CNN host made no difference to her, and the term "media power couple" didn't appeal to her.

"We've grown up together so I don't look at us as a media power couple," Cristina explained. "When we met, we were working across the street from each other when he was a lawyer and I was doing, well, what I am doing now — editing a city magazine. His success now is no surprise to me — I've always known how intelligent and talented he is and eventually the world would catch up. With three kids at home, I am happy to be his plus-one from time to time, but the real party is at home."

After their fairy-tail wedding, she began working for the likes of 'Manhattan' and 'Beach,' two luxury lifestyle publications, before moving on to an editorial role at 'Modern Luxury.' As her career continued to take off in the high-end world of luxury living, Cristina began to understand the desires of her readers as well. What they wanted most, she realized, was to slow down the aging process and keep a healthy body for as long as they can. And as Cristina grew older, she realized that she too had the same desire.

"When you turn 40, it’s a momentous occasion," Cristina told Elle. "They say the body you have at 40 is the body you can keep forever, with proper maintenance. So what does that mean, Cristina? Am I eating well enough? Am I sleeping properly? How are my stress levels?"

In that same interview, the lifestyle-writer revealed that she began educating herself on holistic health and wellness. At 43 years old, she said she started to feel unusually drowsy, which pushed her to embark on her wellness journey. After much trial and error and many consultations with holistic specialists, Cristina came up with her own health & wellness regimen. In 2017, she told Mama and Tata that she stays away from both dairy and gluten, and consumes a lot of green tea and vitamin C. Her favorite beverages are her daily Matcha latte with coconut milk and a juice mix with celery, cucumber, ginger, and lemon. She also works out every day, usually surfing, spinning, or yoga. While Cristina does aim to get 8 hours of sleep every night, she admitted that that was "wishful thinking" thanks to her three kids.

That, perhaps, was her inspiration behind 'Purist,' the magazine she launched in 2017. The glossy print magazine features lifestyle insights from the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Arianna Huffington, and Julianne Moore, and aims to help her high-end audience pursue their best, healthiest self.

"Make the things you let into your body, mind and spirit matter," the media-mogul wrote in Purist's very first letter to her readers. "Let Purist be your guide."

When flipping through the publication, readers will find articles on wellness, exercise, and nutritious eating.

“Education, the environment, technology, and community service – these are the things that are important,” Cristina wrote on the magazine's website. “But when I had three children, quality of life and health opened my heart to the world many parents live in: the world of wellness.”

Each 'Purist' piece features words of encouragement and inspiration for the audience to keep on track on their pursuit of wellness.

“The Purist is the place to discover ways to refine and define the life you seek,” she wrote. “Here, you will find strength, equilibrium, peace of mind, lots of laughter, and loads of love.”

Outside of the world of publishing, Cristina enjoys the little things in life. When asked how she enjoys spending her "me" time, the journalist said she enjoys reading, educating herself on integrative nutrition, and even indulging in a TV show once in a while. She also practices Transcendental Meditation sessions, something she says she was "fortunate" to learn from Bob Roth. However, her absolute favorite thing to do is cuddle. "Cuddle time is also 'me' time–it soothes and feeds my soul," Cristina said.

Those cuddle sessions, we can assume, will probably be with her husband Chris and their three children: Bella, 17, Mario Jr., 14, and Carolina, 11.

The eldest, Bella, has seemingly inherited her mother's creative mind. According to Oprah Mag, the teen is quite the actor, having starred in a couple of stage productions including "Chicago" and "Mary Poppins." Speaking to Mama and Tata, Cristina revealed that Bella was a talented singer with a "great blues-y voice."

"Whether it's Mama Mia, Hamilton, some pop song, the Police or Dolly Parton--she loves it all," the doting mom added.

She and Cristina are pretty close, with the two frequently appearing together in each other's posts. In one particularly cute video, the two are seen singing their hearts out to the hit song, “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z.

Mario Jr., who was named after his late grandfather Mario Cuomo, is the least outspoken of the bunch. In a feature piece for CNN, Chris admitted that having a son "changed [his] life." He admitted that the two would frequently butt heads, as Chris tends to be loud and demanding, while his son is quieter and often much more sensitive. That eventually cause Chris to rethink his parenting style and become a new person.

Mario Jr. has a knack for martial arts, with the little guy earning his black belt in the summer of 2019. His proud mom couldn't help but show off his accomplishment on Instagram. Along with a photo of Mario Jr. and his coach, Cristina penned a sweet caption to mark his accomplishment. She wrote:

"I’ve never been prouder as a mom than at this moment when my son, Mario, after almost 6 years of commitment, focus, and will completed his black belt test. Mario is a black belt now!!!! Here, the kohai is with his karate master, senpai Chadwick Simon."

The boy isn't the only active Cuomo youngster, as his little sister, Carolina, is a talented gymnast. Last year, the youngest sibling won first place in Floor Gymnastics and third place overall at the Manhattan Classic Gymnastics competition. Cristina once again took to social media to praise her daughter in a post that revealed her nickname for her is "Cha Cha."

"Big day for Cha Cha at the Manhattan Classic Gymnastics meet! 1st place for floor, 3rd place overall!" Cristina wrote.

Cristina is perhaps above all else, a dedicated mother. When speaking to Mama and Tata, she stressed that she works hard on instilling important life lessons and skills to them. She said

"Every day is a learning experience as a mother and there are no tools to prepare us for each and every situation. But ideally I hope to instill a strong sense of kindness, confidence, and self-love as it pertains to their well-being in them. Those are the tools for navigating the world around us, as well as the tools for loving others properly as well as our environment."
