In 2017, on the 73rd anniversary of D-Day, a moving choral rendition of When You Believe was performed on the infamous Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. Barefoot and in matching attire, the children of the One Voice Children's Choir assembles to bring light the ever-lasting ideals fought for on that beach. In a message of hope and renewal, the children sing with bravery and professionalism.

Inspiring Voices

Right away it should be said that these children's voices toe the line between professional and angelic. Though the event must call for some nerves, these little performers never falter, giving full power to their touching message. The song begins in two emotionally powerful solo performances that call up the better side of human nature. Then the bridge of the song is picked up by the entire choir with an excellent melodic arrangement. The feeling truly is one of togetherness, as both the song's lyrics and beach suggest.

A Fitting Song

First appearing in the 1998 Dreamworks animated movie The Prince of Egypt, the song When You Believe speaks to the power of hope among those oppressed. As these young children, the future of generations to come, lend their voice to this message, it is hard to feel anything but hope. Maybe also included is a sense of gratitude for those who stood up against oppression and fought during the Storming of Normandy. Though the song later became a radio hit as a duet with powerhouses Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, this version of When You Believe pulls just as hard at the heartstrings.

An Epic, but Subtle Styling

The memorial tribute performance could have been overdone or emotionally distant, but the One Voice Children's Choir struck a balance between connection and subtlety. The first thing noticed is the actual location on the beach. Usually, the Omaha Beach is shown from the water's perspective, highlighting the formidable fortress it was for military forces. Here, the children assemble in the shoreline and walk barefoot as the waves ebb and flow. Moreover, a drone is used to take various wide shots from above, emphasizing the epic nature of their performance.
