Every parent’s worst nightmare is to have their child go missing. Unfortunately, a set of parents in Texas knew this pain all too well. A young girl and two young boys all went missing at about 8 p.m. on the evening of Sept. 30, 2021, in the Sam Houston National Forest in Montgomery County, Texas. The forest is located about 50 miles north of Houston.

After hours of searching, the three children, two of which are siblings, were finally found and returned home to their respective parents. The children first went missing Sept. 30 with a search and rescue mission starting that same day. Officers from the Montgomery County Sheriff Department as well as several volunteers searched for hours looking for the lost children, but their efforts were to no avail, and night quickly fell on them.

The following morning, the team resumed their search in the daylight hours, desperately looking through as much of the woods as possible. It had been rainy and people were sure that the children must have been tired, cold and hungry. Fortunately, all of the officers and volunteers’ efforts paid off and they successfully spotted the children. They quickly scurried the kids, aged 6 and 7 years old, through the woods to safety.

The children had clearly been through a lot over the last 14 hours they were missing, and all they wanted was to go home and have a nice meal, specifically some hearty cheeseburgers. Read on to find out more about these brave children and their heartwarming reaction to being found.

ABC13 reported that the three children were found safe and unharmed the morning of Oct. 1, 2021. The children live in the Flamingo Lakes subdivision which borders the forest, and they took the trail to go to their friend’s house. Hundreds of people, including fire departments, K9 tracking dogs, officers, volunteers and search and rescue agencies, went looking for the kids and found them around 10 a.m. about a mile from where they entered the woods, as per ABC13.

Bodycam footage from Sergeant Jason Smith showed the children walking through the forest after being found before being bundled up in coats to try to warm them up. Keeping the children in good spirits, Smith told the kids that they would be given something to eat once they were safe and sound since they hadn’t had any food or water for the past 14 hours. One of the boys responded, “Cheeseburgers!”

Smith let the kids know that they were doing a great job trekking through the woods. “I’m trying my best,” one of them replied. Everyone finally made it out of the forest and the three children were reunited with their parents after being evaluated by paramedics, as per ABC13. Sure enough, Smith made sure to tell the childrens’ parents that they wanted cheeseburgers.

In a Facebook post from Oct. 1, 2021, county judge Mark Keough stated that Smith was promoted from deputy to sergeant that day, the same day that he went out and helped find the three missing kids. It’s clear that he and all the other responders and volunteers proved what it really means to serve your community, and we hope that the kids got their cheeseburgers!
