When 11-month-old Scarlet Benjamin was fitted with a hearing aid, she was able to hear her mom and sister for the first time and the beautiful moment caught on film was more than precious.
Scarlet was born three months premature. While in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, she developed necrotizing enterocolitis, an intestinal disease. Treatment for the condition required an antibiotic that then impaired Scarlet's hearing, her mother, Carol Benjamin of Madison, Georgia, told Good Morning America in January 2019.
However, Scarlet’s family didn’t give up hope that the newborn would one day be able to hear again, and in the months that followed, they took her to see countless doctors to find a way to restore their baby girl’s hearing.
After celebrating 11 months since her birth, doctors were able to fit Scarlet with a hearing aid that made it possible for her to hear again. Excited for her baby’s first reaction to sounds, Carol made sure there was a camera at hand so they could relive the precious moment over and over again. What she did not know was that after posting the video on Facebook to share her baby’s joy, it would touch the hearts of millions across the world as well.
In the video, Carol held Scarlet on her knee as the infant’s older sister, 4-year-old Halie Benjamin, began to speak to her. “Baby sister!” Halie called out to her as Scarlet appeared bewildered while hearing sounds from her sister’s direction. Halie continued to call out “baby sister” until finally, the adorable tot couldn’t contain her excitement and reacted in the most heartwarming manner possible. She let out the cutest laugh ever that made the whole family so happy.

Seeing her baby daughter hear again even made Scarlet’s mother shed some tears of joy as she was filled with so much happiness and gratitude. Scarlet continued to laugh and giggle, and the pure joy of her reaction melted the hearts of viewers the world over. "Hey, you can hear me! I know!" Carol was heard saying to Scarlet, who, amidst her almost unstoppable giggling, swung her head back and forth between her mom behind her and her sister in front of her as they continued to speak.
"It was amazing," Carol told Good Morning America and added, "She screamed really loud and (later) scared herself. It was really cute."
She later posted the video of Scarlet hearing again on Facebook and commented:
“It’s been a LONG and emotional experience. She reacted to most sounds so we thought she could hear fairly well. After what I witnessed today, it was not as well as I thought.”
Carol went on to sing the praises of hearing aids as well as the institution that helped her child regain her hearing.
“Hearing aids make a world of difference. I am so blessed and thankful for Atlanta Hearing Associates in Milledgeville for all that they have done for our baby girl,” she wrote.
She added: "Anyway, enjoy one of the absolute best days of our lives. By the way, I'm crying, you're crying, everyone is crying."
It’s so beautiful to see the way Scarlet reacted when she first heard her family speak and we’re so happy that the young girl was able to regain her hearing abilities.
