Both Cher and Val Kilmer are no strangers to the media’s attention and are pivotal figures in the world of entertainment. They have each faced their own set of challenges yet have also been met with plenty of success over the years in their respective careers as role models to so many adoring fans.

While Cher had dominated the music industry with her definable voice and her beautiful stage presence, she has also taken center stage in a number of productions, specifically in the film industry. Some of her biggest solo hits include “Believe” and “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Kilmer is best known for being an actor in films such as “Real Genius” and “Top Gun.”

While they have each been in the spotlight to celebrate their years of success, they have also received plenty of media attention for their relationships over the years. Cher was famously linked to her late husband Sonny Bono, first meeting him back in the early 1960s. Although they divorced in 1975, they remained close until his death in 1998. Kilmer was also previously married, as he and English actress Joanna Whalley were married from 1988 until 1996.

Although they are no longer together, Cher and Kilmer used to once be connected romantically back in the 1980s. Despite not making it work as a couple, they have remained friends for decades. However, Cher recently revealed some secrets from their relationship from so many years ago. The new intimate details have given fans an exclusive look into what their relationship was really like.

Over the years, both Cher and Kilmer have revealed some insights into their past relationship. While Cher has been linked a number of times with men younger than her, Kilmer has been linked with older women. With a 13-year age gap, it seemed like their relationship with each other met their preferences at the time.

During a game of “Spill Your Guts” in 2018 with James Corden, Cher revealed that Kilmer was a great kisser. “When we kissed, I thought my head would shoot right off my body,” she said. Kilmer has also spoken up about what it has been like to date such dynamic women, including Ellen Barkin, Cindy Crawford, Michelle Pfeiffer and Cher.

“I’m committed,” he said, explaining what’s made him so appealing to so many charismatic women. Kilmer continued, “You have to be committed with a woman that’s as dynamic and as committed to their work. As someone like Cindy Crawford, who was the number one model on the planet at the time.”

Kilmer has faced many obstacles in his life, and was diagnosed with throat cancer back in 2016. He received tracheotomy, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and has been cancer-free for the past few years. In his memoir “I’m Your Huckleberry,” Kilmer wrote about an incident that happened when he was recovering at Cher’s home. According to People, he wrote, “One night I suddenly awoke vomiting blood that covered the bed like a scene out of the ‘The Godfather.’ I prayed immediately, then called 911. Then alerted my hostess. Cher stepped in and stepped up."

Speaking with People in August 2021, Cher opened up about her past relationship with Kilmer. She revealed that she called him Sid and he called her Ethel, names that they have since kept for each other. They first met at a birthday party Cher’s friend held for her. “We became friends because we laughed at the same things constantly,” she said. Kilmer would platonically spend the night at her place and tell the singer about his dreams.

They spent time with each other’s children and their bond continued to grow, but they stayed determined to remain independent. That didn’t mean that they weren’t there for each other, though, as Cher revealed that Kilmer helped her with the screen test for the film “Mask” and she helped him with “Desire Under the Elms.” They shared a similar sense of humor and had an amazing amount of fun together. Recalling their relationship, Cher said, “It went from madly in love and laughing hysterically to respecting each other’s ability.”

Recently Cher reconnected with Kilmer after viewing his documentary called “Val.” Released in July 2021, “Val” is about the past 40 years of the actor’s life, including never-before seen-footage. Cher described the film as “an extension of his art and his life,” as it showed not only the great moments in Kilmer’s life, but also the tough times from when he was sick.

She wrote to Kilmer explaining just how much she loved the documentary and how it truly encompassed all the wonderful traits Kilmer possesses. “You are brave and beyond brilliant,” she wrote to him. It’s clear that the two still share a beautiful bond with one another.
