Released in 2010, the film “Burlesque” positioned itself as a glittering celebration of music, ambition, and reinvention, anchored by a high-profile cast and theatrical spectacle. The film starred Cher as Tess Scali, the commanding owner of a struggling Los Angeles burlesque club, alongside Christina Aguilera in her film debut as Ali, a small-town singer determined to claim her place on stage.
Kristen Bell portrayed Nikki, one of the club’s established performers whose confidence masks personal insecurity. The ensemble also included Stanley Tucci, Peter Gallagher, Eric Dane, Alan Cumming, Cam Gigandet, and Julianne Hough.
Directed by Steven Antin, “Burlesque” combined original musical numbers with dramatic storytelling and stylized performances. Despite a mixed critical reception, the film grossed over $90 million worldwide. Its soundtrack, driven by powerhouse vocals and show-stopping numbers, became one of the film’s most enduring elements.
Behind the scenes, however, reports suggested that the production faced significant internal challenges. In November 2010, The Hollywood Reporter published an article detailing tensions between key figures involved in the project, citing accounts of intense clashes during filming. These issues were later contextualized through interviews that described the demanding nature of large-scale musical productions, particularly those involving extended shooting schedules and complex choreography.
Years later, reflections from cast members added nuance to the film’s legacy. During an appearance on the Jan. 5, 2026, episode of Dax Shepard’s podcast “Armchair Expert,” Cher revisited her experience working on the movie, offering candid insights into the challenges that shaped the final product.
Joined by Shepard, his wife and “Burlesque” co-star Bell, the conversation shed light on the dynamics that unfolded during production and how they influenced the atmosphere on set. While discussing the film, Bell recalled her reaction to joining the cast, saying, “I was very excited because it was Cher, Christina Aguilera.”

Bell later described the production succinctly:
“It was a hard shoot. It was hard.”
Cher expanded on that sentiment, suggesting that external factors prevented “Burlesque” from reaching its full creative potential. She stated:
“Also, it could have been a really good fun movie except for you-know-who. Except for both of them.”
Both Bell and Cher clarified that no fellow cast members were responsible for the difficulties encountered during filming. Shepard, who was dating Bell at the time, offered further perspective, noting:
“What I think I can say, not being involved with it, was there was a romantic relationship happening for people that were very high above.”
Cher confirmed this observation, and Shepard continued, “And that was playing out on set quite frequently and dramatically and uniquely to anyone that’s been in show business.” Production strain had been acknowledged publicly before.
In a November 2010 interview with The Advocate, director Antin said:
“Things get heated on a movie with this kind of a schedule where everybody's tired from working 15-, 16-hour days… It was a total f---ing nightmare. And it was a dream come true.” He also described his professional relationship with Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper as “complicated.”
Cher further revealed that one executive wanted to remove her ballad “You Haven't Seen the Last of Me,” recalling:
“He said, ‘I’m cutting that song out cuz I don't want Cher to ruin my movie.’ ”
Despite the tension, the song remained and later won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Reflecting on her dynamic with Bell, Cher emphasized mutual respect:
“We were very sympatico and I respected her a lot.” Addressing her celebrity status, she added, “I’m a woman who’s always worked… I am who I am and I’ve worked hard to be who I am.”
