From one icon to another, Cher honored Betty White with a beautiful rendition of “Thank You For Being A Friend” on the NBC special “Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl.” Cher and other notable figures like Goldie Hawn, President Joe Biden, Tracy Morgan, and Jean Smart all paid tribute to the star and said kind words about her. To make the occasion even more special, Cher sang the “Golden Girls” theme song on Stage 5 where the show was filmed.
The song “Thank you For Being A Friend” was originally written and performed by Andrew Gold. Cynthia Fee covered the song and her version was used as the theme for “The Golden Girls.” According to Gold, the song was easy to write and took him about an hour. After gaining extreme popularity from the show, the song has been featured throughout popular culture ever since.

Just weeks before her death, White was on the cover of People where she shared her feelings about growing older and her co-stars from “The Proposal,” Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, shared their thoughts on the actress. "Timing isn't easy in comedy, because you have to navigate other people's timing. Betty pivots like I have never seen, making it look seamless," Bullock said. "The rest of us just remain silent and pray we're not cut out of the scene."
White was incredibly talented and a comedic genius. Reynolds added: "I heard that scripts for Golden Girls were only 35 pages, which makes sense because so many of the laughs come from Betty simply looking at her castmates."
On January 21, 2022, White’s assistant posted a video of the star on Instagram that she had recorded a few weeks before her death. The video was meant to get fans excited for White’s 100th birthday which would have been on January 17. The actress says in the video, "I just want to thank you all for your love and support over the years. Thank you so much and stick around."
White’s assistant shared the good news that fans had raised a ton of money for animal welfare, which was a cause close to Betty’s heart. The post said: “As we continue to see number coming in from all over the world — it’s just absolutely amazing how much money all of you raised for the animals through #thebettywhitechallenge. She could never have imagined such an outpouring of love and would have been so grateful to everyone.”

The message from White’s team continued: “When we recorded her special message to fans who attended the movie, we also recorded one that we had planned to put on social media on her birthday. She was using the occasion of her 100th birthday to celebrate YOU - her fans. She knew how lucky she was; she felt the love, and she never took it for granted. I think it’s appropriate to post today as a thank you from Betty and the animals.”
Cher posted a video of her singing “Thank You For Being A Friend” on Instagram and captioned it: “Every Friend is Golden.” Her rendition of the song is beautiful and a touching tribute from one legendary star to another.
During the NBC special “Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl,” the singer shared kind words about White. “She was a true American icon, but what really stood out about her is that she was exactly who we all want in a friend—warm, caring, authentic, and always fun,” Cher said.
Cher added that the first time she saw White was on the television series “Life with Elizabeth” when she was 7. “I came upon this face. It was really sweet. She looked like a beauty queen. It had big dimples and I think that was the beginning of my love affair with Betty White,” she said during the special.
Even President Joe Biden had some touching words to say about White. He shared:
“Betty White was an American treasure. An icon and a pioneer. She challenged conventions. With every laugh and smile she opened our hearts. But above all, she moved our souls, and the soul of our nation. What a gift we’ll always treasure. God bless you, Betty. We all love you.”
