Before you dive into the act of carving your bird, you need to consider the tool you're using for the task. The most important factor for your carving knife is sharpness. If it’s dull, the meat will turn out shredded, and the skin will detach.

Another mistake is to carve the turkey at the dining room table. This might seem like a good way to provide entertainment for your guests, but it’s not an ideal place because the table is crowded and you won’t have enough room to work. Instead, carve some meat ahead of time in the kitchen and arrange it beautifully on a platter.

It's common to cook the stuffing inside the turkey, but this is not an ideal approach. Although it’s called “stuffing,” and it seems like the proper thing to do, it’s better to cook the stuffing outside of the bird. This will result in crispier stuffing and the meat won’t get dried out from the bread soaking up all the juices inside of the turkey.

When the turkey is finished cooking, it’s important to let it sit for a while before you start carving, or else the hot juices will flow out of the meat. If you let it cool slightly, the meat will be more tender and juicy. When you’re ready to carve, the first step is to cut off the legs and wings.

Rather than carving breast slices directly off of the bird, you should first remove the breasts, then carve them into beautiful slices with the skin attached. For a beautiful presentation, assemble the legs, wings and breasts together on a platter in a way that resembles the original form of the turkey.
