Charming Baby Seal Attempts To Become Friends With Woman

Baby animals have a way of stealing our hearts. It could be the way they look at us with big eyes and cute expressions. This baby elephant seal is no exception, as he tries to befriend a group on an expedition in Antarctica.

Elephant seals can be found in either northern or southern areas. According to National Geographic, northern elephant seals are found primarily near California and Baja California. Southern elephant seals, like this one, can be found in the cold conditions of Antarctica.

Amazingly, southern elephant seals can live for a very long time, some even up to 22 years! Their name comes from their snouts, which have a trunk-like appearance, and not from their huge size.

The video shows an expedition with Cheesemans’ Ecology Safari to Antarctica. The group traveled to Livingston Island for an observation of a Gentoo penguin colony. They were in for a real surprise when they saw a group of elephant seals relaxing near the colony. An even bigger surprise was the way in which they were greeted by this young elephant seal pup.

The seal spotted the group from afar. It was obvious he was very curious as he kept moving closer and closer to them, until he was right next to them. The group let him join them and interact with them, and he seemed very happy to do so. At one point he gets so close that they need to change the camera angle as he blocks the shot!

The group identified the seal as having been recently weaned, which means he was about 2-3 months old. At the end of the video the group could be heard commenting on what an incredible experience this was. It is so rare to interact with an elephant seal, and to be able to say you became friends with one is something this group will never forget.
