Charlize Theron's Response To Daughter As She Says She Needs A Boyfriend Is Excellent

As they begin to make sense of the world around them, children have a knack for asking peculiar questions and saying the most awkward — if not outright rude — things out loud without realizing it. In an interview on Diane Von Furstenberg’s In Charge podcast last month, Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron, who has two children, opened up about one of those teachable parenting moments.

Theron’s youngest daughter August apparently told the 44-year-old actress that she needs a boyfriend — and Charlize’s answer was perfect.

Theron recounted the exchange on In Charge with DVF’s season finale, which was published June 30. Theron explained that her 5-year-old daughter said something along the lines of “'You need a boyfriend!’” Now, whereas some parents might simply brush the comment aside, Theron took advantage of the moment to explain something powerful. Perhaps you don’t need a man to be happy.

"I said, 'Actually, I don't. Right now, I feel really good,' and [August was] like, 'But, you know what, Mom? ... You need a boyfriend, you need a relationship,' " Theron said on the podcast. "And I was like, 'I am in a relationship. I'm in a relationship with myself right now.' "

Rather than simply ignoring her daughter’s comment, the Bombshell actress decided to jump in and correct her daughter's misconception that people need to be in relationships to be happy. If we imagine that Theron hadn’t said anything — or even worse, she could have agreed with the sentiment — then perhaps August would go on thinking that you have to have a partner to be a happy person. But thanks to Theron’s quick answer, it seems like August learned something.

In the interview, Theron continued, saying that, "[My daughter] had this look in her eye like she had never really contemplated that that was even a possibility and I said, 'That is a really important thing for you guys to know.' "

“I remember looking back in the mirror at my little five-year-old's face. Her mind was blown, but I know that was the day she realized there is a different possibility.”

What makes this teachable moment even more important is that Theron’s other daughter, 8-year-old Jackson, was also in the car at the time of the exchange. That means both daughters will come away with a healthy understanding that no one — not even a single mom — needs to be in a relationship to feel good.

Theron’s most recent comments are in keeping with what she’s said in the past. In an interview with Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show earlier this year, Theron told the host: “I've never wanted to get married. That's never been something that's important to me.” And even when Stern pushed Theron to reconsider her answer, saying “But you want a great love of your life,” Theron explained that her children are more than enough.

“I have two amazing little great loves of my life right now. My life is filled with love.”
