Charlize Theron Is Leaning Into a More Masculine Style & Her Daughters Are Not Too Happy About It

Charlize Theron’s daughters have an image of their mother in their heads — and it does not involve flats.

Speaking at the Veuve Clicquot Club Solaire VIP Opening in Venice Beach, Theron opened up about how her personal style has shifted and where it is headed. The short version: away from heels, toward gender-neutral tailoring, and not entirely in the direction her daughters would choose for her.

“I think I used to wear more heels, and I’m more of a flat girl now, for sure,” she told PEOPLE. “I think I’ve always liked more masculine, kind of gender-neutral clothes. But then I also like feminine stuff every once in a while. But I think now, I’m leaning a little bit more into the masculine.”

Her daughters — Jackson, 14, and August, 12, both adopted — are “not too happy” about it, she said with a laugh. Theron has spoken previously about how her daughters see her as something of a princess figure and would prefer she dress accordingly. Her own taste, evidently, is going in a different direction.

The conversation also turned to what she is doing with the clothes her daughters do want to borrow. She has saved many of her signature pieces in her basement for them to wear when they are older — keeping them off limits for now. When one of her daughters found some all-white pieces in the boxes and wanted to wear them to an event, Theron told her they were “for later.”

That particular standoff — mother saving glamorous things for a future her daughters cannot quite imagine yet — is its own kind of fashion story. Theron, for now, is in flats. The daughters are waiting.

The Venice Beach appearance was casual by Theron’s standards — a chunky white ribbed sweater, short blonde hair swept to one side, against the orange backdrop of the Veuve Clicquot branding. It was a relaxed look for a relaxed occasion, and it set the tone for what she had to say. Theron has described her style as “edgy and masculine” in previous interviews, but the current shift represents something slightly different — less about edge, more about ease.

In 2023, she told Vogue that as an “Uber driver for my kids,” she could not imagine doing more in the morning than washing her hair and letting it dry. The comment captured something about where her priorities are in this period of her life — two teenagers, a demanding career, and a wardrobe that increasingly favors comfort and tailoring over the kind of dressing that requires planning.

Theron has been one of the most stylish presences at major fashion weeks and awards seasons for more than two decades — appearing at Paris Fashion Week in jewelled tops, at the Oscars in Dior, at Milan Fashion Week in layered coats. None of that has gone away. She is still the person who attends Givenchy shows and Christian Dior presentations. She is also, increasingly, a woman who wears flats to school pickup and keeps her heels in the basement for her daughters to find later.

Jackson and August, apparently, cannot wait. Theron, for her part, shows no signs of rushing. She has the flats. She has the gender-neutral tailoring. She has the basement full of pieces saved for teenagers who want to be princesses. She has the sense of humor to find all of it completely reasonable. The style era she is in, she has decided, suits her. Her daughters will come around eventually — or they will simply wait until they can get into the basement on their own.
