Some coins are worth a lot more than their face value, usually due to some quirk of fate that caused a misprint at the mint. One such example would be copper pennies from 1943.

That doesn't sound like it should be a big deal, but it was. This was during World War 2. A lot of things were being rationed so they could be diverted into the war effort. Copper was one such item and they stopped making copper pennies during the war. Most pennies that year were stainless steel. However, due to a printing mistake, they did make some copper pennies. They can be worth as much as $10,000 apiece, possibly more.

But be careful. There are also fakes out there.

Another valuable penny is the 1955 Doubled Die Penny. Although the Lincoln portrait looks fine, all the writing has two overlapping copies. It looks a bit like maybe you had a bit too much to drink and your vision is failing to focus. There were probably between 20,000 and 24,000 doubled die pennies released that year, mostly via cigarette vending machines. They can be worth up to $1800, depending upon condition.

For reasons unknown, some 2004 Wisconsin state quarters were printed with an extra leaf. Some people speculate that some employee at the Mint did this on purpose. These coins seem to show up most frequently around Tucson. They can be worth up to $1499.

In 1982, the Philadelphia Mint printed some Roosevelt dimes with no Mint mark. All coins are marked with a letter indicating the Mint where they were made, for example, "S" is for San Francisco and "P" means Philadelphia. Well, except these dimes. The mark was accidentally left off. No one actually knows how many were misprinted this way, but around 10,000 of them have already been found in the Sandusky, Ohio area amusement parks. They are worth up to $300.
