This story is about a pair of cops in Dallas, Texas, who found a heart for their community. Officers Reneeshia McIntyre and Delia Pesina met a charming little girl who led them back to her mother.

After a short conversation, they realized that someone had to do something to help, and if it wasn't going to be the system, it might have to be them. The two officers are being hailed for going above and beyond the call of duty as they collected money from fellow officers to help a mother of six who was in desperate need of help.

Officer Reneeshia McIntyre and Officer Delia Pesina started their workday like normal: patrolling a neighborhood in Dallas, Texas. Nothing eventful had happened, and the pair of partners was looking forward to going home when they received a call to check out a disturbance at a nearby apartment complex.

After they had concluded their business, the officers walked slowly down the apartment building's stairs. CBS DFW reported that it was then that they noticed the most adorable two-year-old child playing alone outside. Officers McIntyre and Pesina signed up to be cops because they care about the residents of their community. When they saw the little girl, they immediately wondered who she was and where her parents were. So they walked up and engaged with the child, all while having no idea what would happen next.

Nothing in the Apartment

When the officers finally found the little girl's home, they were shocked by what they saw. A single mother was supporting a family of six children all on her own, with almost no help from the system or her community.

As per POLICE Magazine, the mother had recently divorced herself from a physically abusive partner. She had given up basic comforts in exchange for safety. But although her entire family cherished the peace that was to be found in the Dallas apartment, they didn't have any possessions to make it feel like a home.

The officers commented that they couldn't believe the family had been living there for an entire month. There was literally nothing in the apartment. The family didn't even have plates; the mother was washing styrofoam plates to make them last until she could afford fresh ones.

A Police-Managed Fundraiser

The two officers had always seen helping the community as part of their job description. Unfortunately, the Dallas Police Department doesn't actually have a budget set aside for families who are in need. So when Officers McIntyre and Pesina wanted to help the mother, they had to take matters into their own hands.

The two partners started a fundraiser and asked other members of the department to chip in. A surprising number of officers were willing to take cash out of their pockets. Soon, the group was able to purchase furniture, mattresses, and other things that the family desperately needed.

The kindhearted officers weren't able to completely fix the Dallas mother's life, but they were at least able to help her apartment feel more like home. By the end of the fundraiser, all six kids were sleeping comfortably in real beds, and the mother was no longer washing styrofoam plates to survive.

When something like this happens, it becomes clear that the strength of a community bond goes far beyond a job description. Even when the system doesn't have the tools it needs to help citizens, people from all walks of life are still willing to step up and fill in the gaps as best as they can.

The officers in this video were sympathetic because they'd also experienced hard times. Have you ever been through this kind of situation? Tell us what happened in the comments, and remember to pass this post along.
