Cello Quartet’s Version Of Bee Gees’ Hit Song Is Sheer Delight

Recently, pop music is being given a makeover by way of classical renditions, with Kris Bowers and the Vitamin String Quartet's work for the "Bridgerton" soundtrack a leading example.

Now, it's the Bee Gees' turn to get the treatment, and it comes courtesy of the Prague Cello Quartet. Taking to the pop group's iconic 1977 hit "How Deep Is Your Love," the Czech classical ensemble perfectly captures the original song's mood while giving it new life as a classical piece.

Arranged by film score composer Petr Wajsar, the piece begins with the four cellists sitting inside a beautiful old ballroom. The musicians that make up the Prague Cello Quartet are Jan Zvěřina, Petr Špaček, Ivan Vokáč and Jan Zemen. As they begin playing the Bee Gees' tune, it's clear they are very comfortable playing together and that magic is about to happen.

A fan of the song could make out from the opening chords that this is "How Deep Is Your Love," but it's not until the cellists begin playing what is the song's first lyrical lines that it's obvious this is the Bee Gees' hit ballad. Although their rendition has no words, it's as if they're being sung anyway, with the opening lines ringing through any fans ears:

"I know your eyes in the morning sun / I feel you touch me in the pouring rain."

The impassioned looks on the musicians' faces show just how invested they are in this classical cover. It's incredible to see each of them take on a different aspect of the song — from the lyrics to the beat — and translate that into notes on a cello.

About halfway through the song, there is a change in tone, when the cellists switch from using their bow to plucking the strings, lending the song a sprightly and upbeat twist. But soon enough, they're back to playing with their bows and during the song's final quarter they're not holding back at all.

With the utmost emotion pouring through the music, the song comes to a close and the Prague Cello Quartet should be incredibly proud of their achievement. Not only did they give a soul-stirring performance but they updated a '70s pop hit by recreating it in a totally different genre of music.

While only one member of the Bee Gees is still alive today, we're sure they'd be absolutely thrilled with the cover of their song "How Deep Is Your Love" if they could hear it. Made up of three brothers named Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, the Bee Gees rose to fame in the '60s in Australia, before making it on the international stage by the early '70s. They've had many hits during their career with "Stayin' Alive," which was featured in the hit movie "Saturday Night Fever," one of their most famous. We'd love to hear the Prague Cello Quartet cover that song!

If you're a fan of classical music or of what you witnessed here, there's a chance to catch the talented musicians, as they tour the Czech Republic this month. However, if you're unable to attend, the group has a video concert that you can rent via their Vimeo page.
