Catholic Schools In Brisbane Are Teaching Students To Use Gender-Neutral Terms When Referring To God

Using gender-neutral language is becoming more and more common in the world today as we learn how to be sensitive to others. It is important to understand that not everyone identifies as a certain gender. While many people are not exactly sure what to think of these changes, rest assured that they are being made.

This thought process is even being used at a number of popular Catholic schools in Brisbane. The students who head to class every day are now being banned from using certain words that indicate that God is a man according to the Courier Mail.
These words include “Lord,” “Son,” and “Father.” Instead, the students are being taught to use gender-neutral language when they must refer to God.

The students of Stuartholme School are being told to use “Godself” instead of the word “himself” when referring to God.
Principal Ms. Wickman has confirmed that she believes that there are many occasions to use gender-neutral language. She told the news that all prayers that are written should not refer to God as a female or male. She stated that the word “Lord” is specifically a male term and one that needs to be taken out of prayer.

However, she does go on to say that gendered language can be used to refer to some biblical figures of the past.
St. Rita’s College uses gendered language for many traditional prayers but have also adopted many gender-neutral terms. A spokesperson for the church stated that this is an area for growth in their church. They have made the appropriate changes to many prayers the children learn every day.

Justin Welby, the Reverend of the church, said to Courier News that language concerning God is inadequate and even metaphorical. He stated that God is not actually a father in the same way that a human is a father. He went on to say that God isn’t male or female.
While many people applaud this new way of thinking, others are shocked that these particular Catholic churches have taken such a stand.
