Cat's Microchip Leads Rescue Organization Right Back To Owners Who Abandoned It

If you heard about a young couple finding a stray cat and taking it upon themselves to bring it to a shelter, you'd probably think they were outstanding samaritans and assets to their local community. While this seemed to initially be the case at the Midwest Animal Shelter in Missouri, the truth that later emerged turned out to be far more sinister.

Sydney Mollentine is the manager of the shelter. One afternoon, a young couple in their early- to mid-20s walked into her shelter carrying a sweet gray cat. They told Sydney that they found the cat wandering the neighborhood and wanted to do the right thing and take it somewhere safe.

Sydney was touched by their kindness but told them that her shelter was at capacity. She gave them the address of another shelter that would be able to accommodate the cat.

The couple agreed to take the cat to the other shelter. Since the man was carrying the cat in his arms, Sydney offered to give them a cardboard crate. Although she found it slightly odd that the man was willing to carry a stray without a crate, she brushed the thought away and instead decided to help the good samaritans.

The couple left with the cat inside its new carrying crate. That's when Sydney saw something disturbing on the feed from the parking lot surveillance camera. The couple put the crate containing the gray cat on the sidewalk, got into their old car and sped away.

However, that wasn't the worst of it. With no other choice than to bring the cat into her already-crowded shelter, Sydney took the cat inside.

As veterinarian staff examined the kitty, they realized that he was microchipped. It turns out the cat had originated from their own shelter and that the people who'd adopted him were the same cruel couple who'd abandoned him in the parking lot.

"It's heartbreaking. It's sad," Sydney told FOX4 News, noting that she wants all cats who leave her facility to find their forever homes.

Thankfully, the shelter has no intention of trying to return the cat to his former owners. Instead, he is available for adoption. Sydney says that he's incredibly kind and loving.

Spread this story far and wide so that this adorable kitty can hopefully find his real forever home and so that this callous couple can be shamed for discarding this precious creature like a piece of trash.
