Cashier’s Dreams Turn Into Reality After Singing In Checkout

Competition-based reality shows introduced us to the idea that talented singers can get worldwide recognition without agents and other show-biz trappings. Shows like "American Idol," "America's Got Talent" and "The Voice" give everyday people a chance in the spotlight, even if they've never given any thought to becoming famous. With almost everyone carrying a smartphone, ordinary folks have an opportunity to hit the big time thanks to a single "performance" that goes viral. A Walmart cashier who couldn't help but burst into song while working is an example of this phenomenon.

Arguably no one ever suspected that 21-year-old cashier Kayla Slone was an amazing country singer. As ABC News reported, the cashier with the voice of an angel had always dreamed of singing at Nashville’s famous Grand Ole Opry. But growing up in Logan, West Virginia, she never imagined she'd actually get the chance. At 15, Kayla made a DIY album with her brother. Unfortunately, nothing ever became of the record.

One day at work, though, Slone broke into song while scanning items at the cash register. An impressed customer whipped out a phone and caught Kayla's performance on video. The young cashier belted out Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors," a 1971 song that's become a classic.

The video shows Slone playing with a pen, wearing a uniform and name tag, staring out as she sings the country tune. Kayla's performance of the country classic is truly inspiring. Her delivery is angelic as she sings its touching lyrics: “Although we had no money I was rich as I could be In my coat of many colors My momma made for me”

Kayla Slone's performance was goosebump-inducing despite her lack of equipment. There's no microphone to amplify her vocals, but her simply beautiful performance was enough to make the video go viral once it was uploaded. Viewers left comments like this:

“This girl sings soooo pretty. Just like Dolly Parton. This is a God given talent and hope she gets recognized.”

Kayla, a coal miner's wife, went from keeping her music to herself to being recognized by strangers. Many even asked her to sing for them. Even the media came calling; soon, Kayla found herself being interviewed by outlets such as ABC News.

During her interview, taped at her workplace, Slone shared her surprise that her version of the Dolly Parton song had become such a hit. She also revealed her dream of singing at the Grand Ole Opry. As luck would have it, members of the Grand Ole Opry team saw Kayla's video and decided to make her wish come true.

Speaking with ABC News, Opry Vice President and General Manager Pete Fisher said,

“Country music at its best is about real people singing real stories about real life. How the chips fall often times in the music industry can be very hard to predict, but it starts with a voice and a passion and we’re happy to give her a stage.”

Slone and her husband headed to Nashville, where Kayla sang "Coal Miner's Daughter" by country legend Loretta Lynn. Before Slone performed the hit song in front of a huge crowd, she received a call from Ms. Lynn. Loretta called to wish Kayla luck before she belted out Lynn's song, fulfilling her lifelong dream.
