Sir Tom Moore became a national hero in Britain after raising £33 million ($40.3 million) for the National Health Service in the run-up to his 100th birthday.

Today, he traveled with his family to Windsor Castle, where he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, 94, in a unique ceremony. Although the Queen had been self-isolating alongside her 99-year-old husband, Prince Philip, the monarch stepped out for the first time today; first to attend her granddaughter Princess Beatrice’s wedding and later to the knighting ceremony for Moore, as The Telegraph reports.

The ceremony was carried out by the Queen herself, who used a sword that belonged to her father, King George VI.

“It was an absolutely outstanding day, you could never believe at 100 I would get such an honor that I have today,” Moore said of the day, according to Metro.

“Never ever have I been so privileged as to be so close to the Queen and to speak to her, that really was outstanding.”

Moore became "Sir Tom" after a special nomination from Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The World War II veteran raised the world record sum by painstakingly completing 100 laps of his garden with the aid of a walking frame.

"Colonel Tom's fantastic fund-raising broke records, inspired the whole country, and provided us all with a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus," Johnson said on Tuesday, according to the BBC.

"On behalf of everyone who has been moved by his incredible story, I want to say a huge 'thank you.' He's a true national treasure."
