Upon Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles' engagement in February 2005, a statement from the palace was released. In it, questions about Camilla's status and title as queen were addressed.

However, fifteen years later Camilla has been more accepted by the public and her title might change.

The statement, released on February 10, 2005, announced their marriage and immediately mentioned that Camilla would be using the title "HRH The Duchess of Cornwall." It clarified that since Prince Charles is next in line after Queen Elizabeth, "It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne."

Harpers Bazaar notes that Camilla actually had the opportunity to pick up the title "Princess of Wales," but since the beloved, late Princess Diana was bestowed that title, Camilla avoided it.

Things might have changed since the 2005 announcement, as Vanity Fair reports. They note that with the public opinion of Camilla slowly changing over time, she would probably be given the title "queen consort," which is "the customary title for the wife of a reigning king."

According to Harpers Bazaar, this would also be Kate Middleton's title once Prince William becomes king.

Charles and Camilla have had a long, storied relationship in the public eye, starting all the way back in the 1970's. Vanity Fair tells the tale of how Camilla wasn't wife material -- although she and Charles were instantly smitten -- since she was already involved with her now ex-husband, Andrew Parker-Bowles. Prince Charles went on to wed Princess Diana, and eight years after her passing, he married Camilla.

Needless to say, Camilla Parker Bowles' public persona has been met with everything from skepticism and confusion to happiness and contentment. Her final title will reflect the sentiment of the country and the rest of the royal family.
