Cameron Diaz Prioritizes Family Above Beauty: 'I Don't Care… What I Look Like'

Cameron Diaz was one of Hollywood's top actresses for years, but she's stepped away from the spotlight in more recent years. At the height of her career, Diaz was one of the most sought-after celebrities and starred in major blockbuster films such as "Charlie's Angels," "The Holiday," "Bad Teacher" and the "Shrek" franchise. Her filmography speaks for itself as it has only helped cement Diaz's reputation as a Hollywood A-lister.

Diaz has received plenty of accolades for her work as an actress. However, in 2014, Diaz decided to take a step back from the spotlight. She starred in the remake of "Annie," in which she played the role of Miss Hanigan. While her role in "Annie" was received well, Diaz's last film in Hollywood was not a hit.

Nowadays, Diaz is focusing more on other career ventures and other aspects of her life. She has authored two health books called "The Body Book," which was released in 2013 and went on to become a New York Times bestseller, and "The Longevity Book," which was released in 2016. Diaz is also spending much of her time with her family as she is married to musician Benji Madden and is a happy mother to her daughter Raddix.

Diaz is currently 51 years old and is no stranger to the hardships of the entertainment industry, despite not being in the limelight as much these days. However, Diaz has learned a lot about herself and how she feels about aging and beauty routines as someone in the public eye.

Although she has not worked on any major motion films in the past few years, Diaz is still a very recognized and adored celebrity. She has taken a backseat from the limelight and is now focusing on herself, her husband and her daughter.

Diaz married Benji on Jan. 5, 2015, at her home in Beverly Hills, California. The pair first met 10 months earlier thanks to Diaz's friend Nicole Richie, who is married to Benji's brother Joel Madden. In December 2019, Diaz and Benji welcomed their daughter, Raddix, via surrogacy.

Back in 2021, Diaz opened up about her decision to step away from acting. According to the Independent, she wanted to find a way to have more control over her life. She explained, "I just really wanted to make my life manageable by me. My routine in a day is literally what I can manage to do by myself. It's the best feeling, I feel whole."

Her decision to retire from acting also gave Diaz more time to spend with her family. "I met my husband, we started a family, all the things I didn't have time for before, and not just the time for but didn't have the space to make the decisions, the right decision for me at the time," Diaz remarked

However, just because Diaz is not a current movie star doesn't mean that she's free from Hollywood's constant judgment. While speaking with Michelle Visage on the "Rule Breakers" podcast in March 2022, Diaz opened up about how people view her as a 49-year-old woman and how she feels about aging and beauty routines.

According to PEOPLE, Diaz once felt trapped by societal pressures to look a certain way. "I am absolutely a victim to all of the societal objectification and exploitations that women are subjected to," she explained. "I have bought into all of them myself at certain times."

Diaz added, "It's hard not to, it's hard not to look at yourself and judge yourself against other markers of beauty, and I think that that's one of the biggest things… The last eight years, girl – I'm like wild. I'm like a wild animal, like a beast!"

Fortunately, the retired actress has learned to embrace herself and accept herself for who she is as she worked to rid her "toxic" ways. "You just start to pick yourself apart, you know," Diaz explained. "And you're like, 'Why am I sitting here like being so mean to myself?' My body's strong, my body's capable. Why am I going to talk down to it? Why am I going to be mean to it when it's like carried me this far?"

Diaz added, "I don't care. Literally, the last thing I think about on a daily basis – like maybe not at all during the day – is what I look like."

The mother also explained how she rarely puts much effort in her beauty routine as it's not her top priority. "I'm just not in that place right now like where I put any energy," she explained. However, she said that she hopes she can "stay strong" as she continues to age since she turned 51 in August 2023.
