Cameron Diaz was one of Hollywood's top actresses for years, but more recently, she stepped away from the spotlight. At the height of her career, Diaz was one of the most sought-after celebrities and starred in major blockbusters such as "Charlie's Angels," the "Shrek" franchise, "The Holiday" and "Bad Teacher" among a myriad of other titles that have cemented her reputation as a Hollywood A-lister. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Diaz's career was so huge that in 2013 she was the highest-paid female actor over 40.

Naturally, then, it came as a surprise for many fans that Diaz chose to step back from the spotlight around 2014. She received many accolades during her career. She starred in the remake of “Annie,” in which she played the role of Miss Hanigan. While this role was received well, Diaz’s last film in Hollywood was not a hit.

However, Diaz has been very transparent about retiring from acting and her reasons behind the monumental decision. She has been married to musician Benji Madden of the band Good Charlotte since 2015, and the pair welcomed their first child together, Raddix, in 2019. Diaz explained that she wanted to simplify her life, as she constantly required numerous other people to help manage standard daily tasks.

Fortunately for fans of the actress, Diaz appears to be making a comeback! She is teaming up with fellow actor and good friend Jamie Foxx for an upcoming project, marking the end of her retirement – at least for now. Read on to find out more about Diaz’s life and current career moves.

During a 2020 interview with Gwyneth PaltrowDiaz talked about her choice to retire from acting. She said, “I got a peace in my soul because I finally was taking care of myself.” She added:

“It’s a strange thing to say, I know a lot of people won’t understand it, I know you understand it, but it’s so intense to work at that level and be that public and put yourself out there.”

Diaz mentioned that she wanted to have more control over her life. “I stopped and really looked at my life,” she said. “When you’re making a movie, they own you. You’re there for 12 hours a day for months on end, you have no time for anything else. I really needed to know that I could take care of myself, that I knew how to be an adult.”

Diaz also opened up to Kevin Hart on his show "Hart To Heart" as reported by the Independent, and said, "For my personal, spiritual self, I was realizing that that one part of me that functioned at a high level wasn’t enough. It’s fun to do, I love it, I love acting, I could go forever, I sometimes feel like I have unlimited energy and inertia.”

The working woman took a step back to focus on her life as a wife to Madden and as a mother to Raddix. She told InStyle in 2019:

"The way I look at it is that I’ve given more than half of my life to the public. I feel it’s OK for me to take time for myself now to reorganize and choose how I want to come (back) into the world."

Now, it seems that the time for Diaz to come back into the entertainment industry has come. She recently announced that she is going to be returning to the world of acting alongside good friend and fellow actor Jamie Foxx. Foxx shared a recording on Twitter on June 29, 2022, of his phone conversation with Diaz.

The actress shared the same recording on her Instagram stories with the caption, “@iamjamiefoxx Only you could get me back in action!! I can’t frickin wait it’s gonna be a blast!”

During the call, Diaz told Foxx, “I’m so anxious right now. I’m like pacing the room.” When Foxx asked how she was feeling, Diaz replied, “I feel excited, but I don’t know how to do this, ya know?” Fortunately, Foxx added someone else to the call who is pretty familiar with retiring and un-retiring – NFL quarterback Tom Brady. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers player said he had some useful “tips” for Diaz on how to re-enter the industry she previously left behind.

Foxx referenced how iconic both of his friends are in the tweet, writing:

“Cameron I hope you aren’t mad I recorded this, but no turning back now. Had to call in the GOAT to bring back another GOAT. @CameronDiaz and I are BACK IN ACTION – our new movie with @NetflixFilm. Production starting later this year!!”

There’s no telling if Diaz will continue to stay out of retirement in the near future, but for now, fans can rejoice in their favorite actress making her return to the screen!
