When he was 19 years old, Grant Brown was praised for his quick thinking and heroics in saving a 6-year-old boy who was being attacked by a wild dog in Texas in July of 2019.

In July of 2019, 6-year-old Mason Lindman was out enjoying the summer weather in his hometown of Conroe, Texas when a dog began to approach him and his group of friends, according to KPRC. The dog, a pit bull, was owned by one of Mason’s neighbors but was off his leash. The dog began fixating on Mason, perceiving him as a threat.

Uncertain of what to do, Mason put his hand out to the animal, trying to calm it down. Mason’s attempts to stop the animal are ineffective as the dog soon jumps on Mason, throwing him to the ground on the family’s driveway.

Footage of the attack was caught on the family’s surveillance camera, which shows Mason’s struggling against the animal. Once the animal had Mason on the ground, the little boy’s friends run away to alert adults to the situation. One of them came to Mason’s mother, Jillian Lindman.

Upon being alerted of the situation, Jillian recalled hearing her son’s screams. Speaking with reporters from NBC News, Jillian remembered thinking that, since Mason is just a little boy, he was completely unprepared for such a difficult situation. As Mason’s friends and family began working to help the young boy, one of the family’s neighbors, Grant Brown, also sprang into action.

Grant was outside in his yard down the street when he witnessed the dog pounce on Mason. Knowing that he had to get the animal off the child, Grant began sprinting in the direction of the attack. Seeing him draw so close, the animal began focusing on the teenager, letting go of Mason and running after Grant.

"As soon as I noticed I just ran over there without thinking and I didn't know how, but I knew I had to get the dog off of the boy," Brown told KPRC.

Grant’s distraction allowed Mason to escape into his home. Jillian recalled the frightful sight of her son walking up the driveway, his hand covering the back of his head, which was covered in blood.

Although Grant was able to rescue Mason, he was also injured in the incident. As Grant ran from the animal, his shoe slipped off and he fell in a nearby yard. As the dog caught up to him, Grant told reporters that his primary objective was to keep the animal’s mouth away from him. Nevertheless, Mason sustained several bite wounds to his hand.

After the attack, both Mason and Grant had to go to the hospital for treatment. Mason required several staples to the back of his head while Grant needed a bandage on his hand. Thankfully, both made a full recovery. Municipal authorities in Houston later required the dog’s owner to surrender the animal to animal control and cited him for the incident, according to KPRC.

As news of the incident spread in the media, Grant was hailed as a hero for how he was able to save Mason and stop the attack. While the young man has many admirers throughout the country, none are more grateful for his actions than Mason’s mom.

Jillian later told reporters at NBC that there is no way that she can express her gratitude to Grant and that the next time she sees him she will give him a big hug.

Animal experts remind the public that while the dog might have attacked Mason, the fault falls squarely on the shoulders of the animal’s owner. Any dog, despite its breed, can be taught to love and be a good pet if given the proper training and affection from its owners.

In sum, Mason’s story shows that there are many tales of heroics throughout the country. Grant’s quick thinking saved Mason from being mauled by the animal, earning him the praise of the young boy’s mother and people throughout the world.
