Firefighters are truly heroes among us. What a lot of people do not realize is that more than half of the firefighters in this country work on a volunteer basis, meaning they put their lives on the line without even being paid for their heroics.

Three-year-old Alex Stephenson certainly thinks that firefighters are a special breed. According to KJRH - TV in December 2016, Alex's home in Tulsa, Oklahoma was engulfed in flames.

A neighbor heard the cries for help and rushed into the home to rescue the scared tot.

Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and were able to save Alex's mother, Amanda Stephenson.

Although the two survived the harrowing incident, Alex suffered second and third-degree burns over 80 percent of his little body.

In just one month after the fire, Alex had to go through nine surgeries to repair the damage.

Jon Steiner, District Chief of the Tulsa Fire Department, is able to still vividly recall arriving on the scene of the blaze to find Alex's badly burned body. Thankfully, Alex survived and the precious boy was able to visit the Tulsa Fire Department who were so instrumental in getting him to safety and providing immediate medical attention.

Alex used his visit to the fire department to thank the people who helped him and his mother that day. He even found the time to climb inside a real fire truck.
