Bruce Willis’ Wife Puts ‘Family’s Needs Above’ Her Own But Is Facing ‘Struggle’ With Mental Health

Emma Heming is a model and an actress who was first discovered when she was just 16 years old. She was born in June 1978 in Malta. She has appeared in several advertisements around the world for brands such as Escada, Garnier and Redken. Heming has also walked several fashion shows for designers such as Christian Dior, Chanel and Valentino. Aside from modeling, she is also actor Bruce Willis’s wife. 

Willis was born on March 19, 1955, in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. He grew up with a German mother and an American father, who was stationed in the United States military at the time of his birth. In 1957, the family moved to the United States and raised Willis in Penns Grove, New Jersey. In his teens, Willis discovered his passion for acting and began participating in his high school’s dramatic arts program. He later moved to New York City and appeared in a few off-Broadway plays before finally finding his footing in the world of television and film.

Willis was married to actress Demi Moore from 1987 to 2000 and had three children together: Rumer, Scout and Tallulah. In 2007 he met Hemming at a gym and they would tie the knot in March of 2009 in Turks and Caicos. Just a few years after getting married, the two had their first child in April of 2012. The couple welcomed their second child in May of 2014. 

In 2022 Willis and Heming announced something that would shock everyone. The couple announced that the award-winning actor would be stepping away from his acting career to do a medical condition. 

In an Instagram post, the family wrote, 

“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” the post said. 

“As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”

This news was heartbreaking for fans all over the world who admire Willis and his many feature films. His wife, Heming recently opened up and admitted that this journey has not been easy on her or the family. 

"I struggle with making the time for self-care every day," Heming told The Bump in 2022. 

The star’s wife went on to say that she has had to step up in many ways. "I put my family's needs above my own, which I found does not make me any kind of hero. That amount of care for everyone else within my household had taken a toll on my mental health and overall health, and it served no one in my family,” the model said. 

Heming said that despite this new change in their family’s routine, she still tries to show up and be her best self for her family. 

"I don't mother myself perfectly but I know that I have some basic baseline needs that are a must, like first and foremost, exercise. It's a time I can disconnect and can do something that I know makes me feel good overall,” Heming said.

Although Willis’s diagnosis of Aphasia has taken a toll on the whole family, his wife said that she is in love with having her family. 

“I always wanted a family for as long as I could remember. If I had a vision board (which I don’t), family would be the center and everything else would filter around that. The girls bring so much love, laughter, and life into our home,” Heming said.

“For us as a family it’s always been about making memories. I’m not even sure we have rituals or traditions. We just love spending time with each other and we know that time is precious, and I don’t take that for granted,” she added. 

The diagnosis of her husband has undoubtedly changed the family’s lives. However, she has opened up about how much her husband means to her. In 2021, Heming celebrated the couple’s 12th anniversary by uploading an adorable picture of them onto Instagram. In the caption she wrote:

“We’ve had our fair share of floating-on-air ups and disheartening downs. But he is my person. There’s no one I would want to go through this crazy thing called marriage with than with him. He’s my family, he’s given me the family (and more) I dreamed of and I love him to my core.”
