Brother Makes Sister Feel Loved By Taking Her To Father-Daughter Dance After Dad Didn't Show Up

Oct 26, 2021 by apost team

Being a single mother is hard, and although co-parenting with an ex is supposed to relieve single parents, it can often feel futile. This was exactly the case for Trelysia Hamerter when her ex stood up their then-7-year-old daughter named Skylar for a father-daughter dance for the second time. Fortunately, her then-11-year-old brother Christian stepped in and took her to this important event. He might not have been her father, but he clearly showed his love for her and did everything he could to make her feel special.

Skylar's mother, Trelysia Hamerter, took to Facebook on Mar. 1, 2020, to post about the kind gesture by her son towards her daughter. At the time of the post, Skylar was just seven years old, and it was the second consecutive year that her father had stood her up for the father-daughter dance. Mom Trelysia noted that her daughter specifically asked for her father to take her to the dance instead of her grandfather, so she could be more like the other kids. However, Skylar's father, unfortunately, ceased to answer his ex-wife's calls and didn't show up to take his daughter to the dance.

Thankfully Skylar's brother Christian's gentlemanly demeanor made sure that she didn't go without a date to the dance in Covington, Georgia. When Hamerter shared the story on Facebook, thousands of people shared her post and commented on their support for her children's loving relationship.

Read on to learn more about Skylar going to the dance with her brother Christian and what mom Skylar had to say about the kind gesture from her son.

Skylar is like most seven-year-old girls. She loves her family and enjoys having a good time with them. When her father stood her up before the father-daughter dance for the second time, she was truly heartbroken.

A Mom’s Heart Is Broken

Trelysia Hamerter, Skylar’s mother, felt even more intense sadness over this situation because she couldn’t do much to help her daughter. The dance wouldn’t admit a mother instead of her father. This single mother didn’t have a man she could call to stand in for dad, or so she thought.

Christian, Skylar’s 11-year-old brother, was angered and spurred to action by this dire situation. He immediately decided that he was the man who would take his sister to the dance. According to mom, Christian said he wanted his sister to know she “… deserves a man keeping his word and making her feel special.”

Skylar couldn’t have been happier as she donned her gold dress and matching purse. Christian, clothed in a navy suit with a coordinating gold bow tie, beamed with joy as he looked forward to becoming his sister’s hero. Hamerter had purchased the suit and matching tie 'just in case' Skylar's dad stood her up again as he did the year previous. Mom was perhaps the proudest of all, gushing on social media

"Just know that I’m raising someone a GREAT HUSBAND one day.”

In an interview with Today, Hamerter explained her frustration with the situation at the beginning:

"So this year she [Skylar] comes to me ahead of time and says, ‘Mommy, I want my dad to come with me to the dance. I don’t want grandpa. I want my dad, I want everyone to know I have a dad."

Hamerter went on about how she felt helpless initially:

"I felt so bad because there was nothing I could do because I’m not a male."

The mom-of-two then finally recalled the sweet moment in which her son stepped up and said:

"If he doesn’t show, mom, I’d like to take Skylar to the dance... she deserves to know that a man can keep his word and that she’s really special."

Although co-parenting can be difficult, Hamerter's story proved that you can still raise amazing kids as a single parent even if your ex-spouse chooses not to co-parent with you. Although Skylar didn't get to have her dad at the dance as she wanted, she instead got her brother by her side. We're sure these two siblings will grow up loving and supporting each other, even if their dad is out of the picture. Cheers to mom Trelysia for raising her son to step up and take care of his younger sister!
