At a young age, we expect our own happily ever after. Unfortunately, we learn that life is not like Disney movies. Hardships knock us down and we're left drowning in our sorrows. Depressing, right? Well, life can also be amazingly beautiful. One single mother learned this when she received the gift of a lifetime.

Ruth Breen understood what it meant to struggle financially. She couldn't afford a diverse range of food or cable TV. Breen just wanted to provide for her daughter as best as she could given the circumstances.

"Before the win I was always in my overdraft. I'd regularly have beans on toast for tea, at least once a week, just to make sure that we could survive and live," she told The Liverpool Echo.

Ruth Breen wasn't having a pity party though.

Ruth appreciated that she and her daughter had a roof over their heads and they weren't starving. One day in 2014, Ruth's coworkers thought to enter the lottery. Ruth decided to put a few pounds into the group's pool. Little did she know this would change her life forever. Lo and behold this single mother ended up winning one million pounds in the lottery. Ruth couldn't believe her eyes when the email notified her. She immediately called her boss at the infirmary to make sure this was really happening.

After confirming this wasn't a dream, Ruth rushed home to tell her then 11-year-old daughter the amazing news. Her daughter couldn't comprehend how life-changing one million pounds was. She asked Ruth if they could finally have broadband since they were getting a ton of money. The ability to provide her daughter with what she needed and also what she wanted was a wonderful feeling for Ruth. If you're going to accept your lottery check, you have to do it in style.

Ruth finally had the money to treat herself to a nice gift which is exactly what she did. She bought herself a Michael Kors dress, went to a hair salon, and purchased Jimmy Choos shoes for the event. Most people quit their jobs after winning the lottery. Breen loved her job as a midwife so much she decided to keep working there. Most people would say she didn't change much after winning the lottery, even five years later.
