Britain's First Astronaut Says She Is Sure Aliens Exist

Helen Sharman became the first British astronaut in 1991, when she visited the Mir space station. She was also the first woman of any nationality to visit that space station. While she was there, she likely did some deep thinking about the universe, about what else might be out there, about who else might be out there. Looking down at Earth and up at a seemingly infinite number of stars is the perfect scene to entertain those thoughts. She recently said she's sure that aliens exist.

In fact, in an interview that she did with the Guardian on Jan. 5, 2020, Helen said that "aliens exist, there's no two ways about it." She added that with the "billions of stars out there," that's the only possible answer to the question of whether or not there are other life forms out there. She even said that aliens could very well be here on Earth today. Interestingly, Helen also said that they may not even look like the aliens that have featured in so many movies or have any human-like form whatsoever. "It's possible ... we simply can't see them," she said as they could be made up of completely different substances.

Humans are very gradually making their way out of the galaxy. The moon was landed upon by a couple of astronauts in 1969. Ten others followed, and now Mars is in sight. NASA is in the process of launching additional Mars rovers with ambitions to more fully study that planet. Included within those aspirations is trying to determine if life had existed there and seeing how humans could safely make their way the 140 million miles between it and Earth. Although Helen was presumably talking about aliens from much further away than Mars, those upcoming missions could provide a lot more information about her theory.

Helen's far from the first astronaut to hypothesize about the possible existence of life on other planets and in other solar systems. Michael Collins, who joined Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on their trip to the moon in 1969 but who remained in the command module while they explored the surface, recently tweeted, "Yes," to the question, "Do you believe in life outside earth?"

What are your thoughts? Do you believe that life exists outside of Earth? Do you believe that aliens are amongst us? Do you think that humans will eventually explore outside of our solar system?
