Bride-To-Be Left Speechless After Jury Summons Arrives With Unbelievable Timing

Planning a wedding often comes with its fair share of surprises. Between coordinating vendors, confirming guest lists and managing last-minute details, couples learn to expect the occasional hiccup. But for one Kansas bride, the biggest surprise arrived not from a wedding supplier — but from the mail.
Just over two weeks before she was set to fly off and exchange vows in Vatican City, Katrina Badowski opened a letter from the Wyandotte County District Court, as seen on a viral TikTok video. Inside was a jury summons informing her that she had been randomly selected for jury duty.
At first, she wasn’t alarmed. In fact, Badowski said she had always been interested in serving on a jury and had never received a summons in more than a decade.
“I find it deeply ironic that I haven’t been summoned for jury duty in over a decade, as I would genuinely welcome the opportunity,” she told PEOPLE. “I’ve always thought it would be fascinating to experience that civic responsibility, particularly for a complex or high-profile case.”
Then she looked at the date.
“The odds of being called on the exact day of my wedding feels like one of those moments where the universe has a sense of humor,” she said.
Ignoring a jury summons wasn’t an option, but neither was reporting for duty. Badowski and her fiancé, Billie Rodriguez, had already finalized flights, accommodations, vendors and a ceremony at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, making it impossible for her to be in two places at once.
Still, with so many wedding details demanding attention, the jury notice briefly slipped to the bottom of her ever-growing to-do list.

When Badowski revisited the summons several days later, she immediately contacted the Office of the Jury Clerk. She explained that she would be getting married in Italy on the day she was ordered to report.
According to PEOPLE, she even included a link to her wedding website. She offered to provide travel documents as proof, assuring court officials that she would be more than willing to fulfill her civic duty after returning home in September.
The response arrived the very next morning.
“Received and excused you from jury duty. Thank you and Congratulations 😊,” the office wrote.
“Crisis averted!” Badowski later said.
Her fiancé couldn’t resist joking about the perfectly timed coincidence.
“Of course that happened because she is always highly sought after,” Rodriguez told PEOPLE. “I am glad to be able to snag her away from official summons for our special day.”
Amused by the bizarre turn of events, Badowski shared the experience on TikTok, where her video quickly gained more than 40,000 likes and hundreds of comments. Many viewers chimed in with stories of receiving jury summonses on birthdays, graduations and other major milestones, while others praised the court for handling the situation reasonably.
“It’s been funny to see all the commentary online with other people's experiences being summoned for jury duty at inopportune times,” Badowski said.
As memorable as the viral reactions were, nothing topped the coincidence that started it all: after waiting more than a decade to be called for jury service, the summons finally arrived — and it was for the exact same day she was scheduled to say “I do” halfway around the world.
