Bride Excludes Brother-In-Law From Her Wedding And Family Photos Because He’s In A Wheelchair

When it comes to planning a wedding, many couples believe that every single detail needs to be as perfect and flawless as possible. Some people can go a bit too extreme with trying to control everything surrounding their wedding day, leaving some brides to be looked at as bridezillas. However, the wedding day is a day that highlights the happy couple’s first few moments together as a married couple, and first impressions can mean a lot.
In November 2021, a woman on Reddit expressed her interest in going to her sister’s wedding the following month with her husband of eight years. However, when she received her invitation, she was surprised to see that her husband’s name wasn’t on it. He hadn’t been formally invited.
When the original poster (OP) called her sister to see what was going on, her sister dropped a bombshell on her: OP’s husband was allowed to come, but only if he wouldn’t be in any of the family photographs. The sister’s reasoning behind this was that the husband is in a wheelchair and she didn’t want him or his disability to distract from her wedding pictures.
OP was left completely stunned and decided she didn’t want to attend the wedding if her husband was going to be ostracized. However, many of her family members have taken her sister’s side, leaving her to wonder what exactly she should do. Not knowing how to move forward with the frustrating situation, OP went to Reddit in November 2021 to ask users for their help and advice.

Starting off her Reddit post, OP explained that her sister was set to get married in December 2021 and that both she and her husband were planning on attending. However, when she got the invitation, it was only in her name. “When I called my sister and asked about it she said my husband was of course fine to come but she requested that he not be in any family photos,” she said.
OP and her husband have been married for eight years. She explained, “He has been in a wheelchair since he was 16 and my family has always ever known him to be in his chair.” Unfortunately, this was the reason why her sister didn’t want the husband to attend the wedding.
“Apparently my sister doesn’t want him in any of her wedding photos because she is afraid that he’ll take attention away from her because he is ‘different,’” OP said. Her sister wanted to be the main focus in the photographs.
OP continued, “I was livid. I went off on her and told her she was being a selfish bridezilla. I told her we wouldn’t be coming.” Since then, OP has received plenty of calls from her parents and other relatives telling her that she needed to apologize to her sister because her sister was extremely upset hearing that OP would no longer be coming to the wedding. However, OP was also upset that everyone seemed willing to leave her husband out of the picture because of his disability.

“My husband hates being a burden on people and he says he’s fine with not being in the photos,” OP said. “Which made me even angrier because now he feels bad about himself for something I feel is unwarranted.” Her husband said they should still go to the wedding and her family has continued to urge her to apologize to her sister, but OP felt like this was an issue she needed to fight for.
Reddit users were on OP’s side, though, and let her know that her sister was acting completely out of line. One user commented, “This makes me so mad when people forget what a wedding is about because they want the ‘perfect’ wedding. Weddings are about two individuals joining their life together, and deeply loving each other, not having (the) perfect picture to show and post on your Instagram. This is so superficial.”
Another user said:
“Your sister wants to spend ‘her day’ disrespecting your loving marriage because she thinks she’s competing with a disability for attention. She clearly doesn’t understand relationships enough to get married (although that’s another issue I guess). I wouldn’t go to the wedding either because your sister cares more about photos than humans. Tell her to hire some actors that look exactly as she wants them. That way she gets her perfect moment and you don’t have to be there.”
OP replied, “Haha! That’s hilarious. I’ll tell her my wedding gift to her is to hire some semi-attractive actors to take our place. That way she can get the perfect photo.”
