Bride Demands Cash Gifts To Pay For ‘Blow Out’ Wedding But Calls It Off And Dumps Fiancé When People Cancel

Weddings can bring out either the best or the worst in people. While there are plenty of heartwarming stories of grandmothers stepping in as flower girls and father figures walking adopted daughter's down the aisle, there are as many horror stories of bridal party members melting down, freaking out and ruining the day.
The Reddit subthread r/CringePics is one corner of the internet where the best of the worst behavior is known to collect. Posters weigh the relative evils of those unlucky enough to be caught in their crosshairs, with the comment section coming down to a verdict of whether something is cringe or not cringe. This process is especially messy when the topic at hand is a wedding.
In October 2022, one poster uploaded a lengthy screengrab from Facebook. The original post outlined the cancellation of a wedding. For several sprawling paragraphs, the bride, Susan, explained the unlikely event. She opened with, "It comes with great sadness that I am announcing the cancellation of (my) wedding." In addition to being somewhat heartbreaking, her announcement was also apparently just in the nick of time. She continued, "I apologize for canceling only 4 days beforehand." Given she canceled such a large life event with little notice, it can be assumed that she had good reason. To explain, she wrote, "Unfortunately, (my fiance) and I have broken up due to some recent and irreparable problems."
While canceling a wedding just days prior is better than leaving someone at the altar, it did seem like a rash decision. What could the "irreparable problems" have been?

Susan went on to explain that she was going on an extended backpacking trip, during the course of which she planned to heal from the whole ordeal. However, before she left she felt the need to explain the drama that had gone on.
She told of how she met her high school sweetheart, and how the couple attended college together, got engaged and became pregnant with their first child. During this time, she described how the couple saved "nearly $15k for a wedding." She explained that they wanted a "blow out" which would include their son. While touring venues, she mentioned that "a local psychic told (them) to go with the more expensive option and (they) thought why the hell not?" This brought the price tag up to $60k, which Susan said included flights to Aruba.
How would the couple afford this? Susan said, "all we asked was for a little help from our friends and family to make it happen." She specified that the couple asked for cash gifts. She explained that they "asked each guest for around $1,500."
Somehow, some guests agreed to the scheme despite the astronomical cost. A few even "promised (them) more to make (their) dream come true." Susan also said: "My maid of honor pledged $5,000 along with her planning services … (her fiance's) family offered to contribute $3,000. So our request for $1,500 for all other guests was not f***ing out of the ordinary."
She later clarified, "If you couldn't contribute, you weren't invited to our exclusive wedding."

Ultimately, the money required for the wedding didn't materialize. After the couple sent out RSVPs, "only 8 people replied and sent (them) the check." Susan then described her soon-to-be-husband suggesting a wedding in Vegas in order to cut costs which greatly offended the bride-to-be.
After this perceived betrayal from her fiance, Susan described how "livid" she was. She wrote, "How was this supposed to happen without a little help from our friends?" To make matters worse, those who had promised funds were withdrawing their offers, including her fiance's family. She relayed, "Suddenly, more people backed out, including the...maid of honor. My best friend since childhood." The wedding struggles strained her relationship with her fiance as well. She overheard him calling her "stuck up."
Susan lamented how all she wanted was a fairytale wedding. She said, "I just wanted to be a Kardashian for a day and then live my life like normal." Clearly feeling hurt, Susan canceled the event, given they couldn't afford it and it wasn't going to be what she wanted anyway.
However, she then explained how "to cancel everything would have been more than 5k." Despite setting up a GoFundMe, she couldn't put the money together to afford that either.
So, Susan suddenly decided to go backpacking, "to get away from this awful society." In response, one of her friends wrote on Facebook, "you're out of your mind." The Reddit response was the same, with commenters questioning her sanity and the demands she made of her guests. Let's hope she comes back from her trip a changed person.
