He Didn’t Have To Be was released in 1999 and soon hit number one on the country singles chart. Kelley Lovelace was the co-writer for the song. According to Lovelace, Paisley asked him to help write a song explaining what it was like to be a stepdad. Paisley wanted to write a song about Lovelace that would bring his friend's wife to tears.

Many people are raised in single-parent homes. It's very inspirational and uplifting to see such a kind song has managed to become very popular among all music lovers. It stands to prove that there are plenty of individuals out there that care about fatherless and motherless children.

This song dedicates its lyrics to stepdads across the planet. It paints a picture of a man who discovered that the woman he was in love with had a son. The man in the song begins to bring the young boy with him on dates and outings that he would take the boy's mother on.

The story goes on in the song and the man asks that boy's mother to marry him. He gladly becomes a real father to the child. Towards the end of the song, it continues the saga diving into the son's own experience of having his first child. The boy in the song hopes that one day he'll be as great of a father as the stepdad who didn't have to be.

Paisley’s masterpiece immediately became popular on Billboard's Hot Country Songs Chart. It ranked as number one for over a week.

So many children in our country are suffering because they don't have a good role model to pattern themselves after. Hopefully, inspirational songs like this one will influence men and women in the community to put their best foot forward when it comes to children.
