Boyfriend Feels Jealous After Another Man Gifts $500 Roses To His GF For Her Birthday

Oct 13, 2021 by apost team

Giving someone a birthday gift is a great way to show them just how much you really appreciate them and how much they mean to you. It can be a bit nerve-wracking to find the perfect gift, especially one that’s within your budget. While most people believe that it’s the thought that really counts, others are determined to find the best gift they possibly can.

A man was preparing to get a gift for his girlfriend’s birthday, but his plans were undermined when one of her friends got her an extremely expensive and extravagant gift. The friend had gotten the man’s girlfriend $500 worth of roses. Not only did this feel completely out of line to the boyfriend, but he couldn’t help but feel anxious about having to top the gift and jealous that another man had given his girlfriend something so lavish.

Jealousy can be a tricky emotion to deal with, and it seemed like this man’s jealousy got the better of him. His girlfriend absolutely loved the flowers she received, but he couldn’t help but be upset that she was showing off a gift that another man had given her.

The couple ended up fighting, and the boyfriend really wanted to confront the man who had bought her such an expensive gift. He went to Reddit on Sept. 29, 2021, to share his story and seek advice on how he should go about handling the situation. However, Reddit users shared very conflicting opinions in the comments, sparking a debate about whether the roses were really a romantic gesture or not.

Upset With The Gift’s Cost

Starting off his Reddit post, the original poster (OP) made it clear that he knew the man who gave his girlfriend flowers was just her friend. “I’m upset because they’re better flowers than I can afford for her birthday so anything I get for her will be a pity,” he said. His girlfriend had already posted a picture of the flowers on her social media but was ready to say they were from him instead of her friend in case anyone asked.

OP continued, “They’re roses too, and she picked the color ahead of time so she knew they were coming.” The friend is a businessman who’s a partner at the floral shop where he got the bouquet, so he got the flowers for a discount. While OP first thought the flowers were worth about $500, he realized his estimation was wrong, and they were probably worth closer to $1,000.

Although the friend is married, his relationship is considered flexible. “I got extremely jealous and was about to message him telling him hey, I respect your friendship but this is too much,” OP said. However, his girlfriend stopped him from doing so, saying that his problem lay with her, not her friend.

Reddit users were torn on whether OP was right to be so upset with his girlfriend’s friend for giving her such an extravagant gift. Some users argued that it’s normal for men and women to just be friends, and some people like to splurge on their friends. Also, flowers have many meanings besides being a symbol of romance.

Conflicting Opinions

One user commented, “A gift isn’t about the cost, it’s about the thought put into it, and if you continue to compare dollar amounts, you’re always gonna find someone who can afford more than you.” Another user agreed, saying, “Big grand gestures are lovely, but everyone who’s old enough to date should understand that the big gestures aren’t what counts.”

However, other users were convinced that the girlfriend’s friend overstepped. One user commented, “OP, keep this guy at arm’s length. Roses are a romantic gift in most parts of the world, he’s trying to woo her.”

Another user agreed and said, “In what world is it AT ALL appropriate to buy someone flowers like that when they aren’t in a relationship with that person??? If this guy was an actual friend and wanted your girlfriend to receive a beautiful gift of flowers, couldn’t he have offered YOU the deal he got??”

OP edited his post to comment on all of the responses he received. He admitted he was wrong for wanting to message his girlfriend’s friend, but he was shocked at how many people thought it was fine for a married man to send so many flowers to another man’s girlfriend. “Also very surprised at how few people think roses are a romantic gift, you all grew up in a different world than I did,” he said.

Fortunately, OP resolved the issue with his girlfriend and apologized for trying to text her friend but still let her know that he found the gift completely inappropriate.
