Finding a safe, happy learning environment for children is a top priority for any parent, but Dan and Lauren struggled in this area. Their autistic son was removed from his specialized school in second grade because of behavioral problems.

His parents were devasted and thought they may never find a teacher who would take the time to give him the attention that he needed.

This thankfully changed when his parents enrolled him in Avon East Elementary and he entered the classroom of Michelle Szczepanski.

Dan and Lauren were thrilled to see that Michelle was the teacher they had been hoping to find.

She provided their son, Noah, with the extra support that he needed to thrive in school.

One of the many steps that Michelle takes to create a happy, productive learning environment for all of her students is to have “shout-out bucket.”

Her students are encouraged to spend a few minutes periodically writing down compliments or other kind words to their classmates.

All of the notes placed in the bucket are then divvied out for their recipients to read and appreciate.

When Noah received four heartfelt compliments in one day, he was overwhelmed with gratitude and warmth. One of these compliments mentioned that the classmate was grateful that Noah taught him or her that being different is not a bad thing.

Noah rushed home that day eager to create a project for his classmates.

He sat down at his computer intent on creating something special that showed his classmates and teacher how grateful he was for their support and for making him feel included and appreciated.
