Boy With Autism Composes Poem For Homework, His Teacher Is Speechless

In all of its formats, art is beautiful in various ways. True art has the power to move audiences emotionally, and this is exactly what a heartfelt poem written by an autistic 10-year-old boy has accomplished.

When young Benjamin Giroux was tasked with writing a poem as a homework assignment, he held nothing back. His poem is simple in its phrasing, yet it was significantly revealing his struggles living with autism. While Benjamin could have jotted down a quick, meaningless poem simply to complete the assignment, he decided to spend a considerable amount of time creating a true work of art.

His poem describes the emotional struggle that he likely faces on a daily basis as he lives with autism. In the poem, he talks about feeling depressed, odd and out of place. He understands that he is not like the other children. He struggles when he hears them laugh and talk about him behind his back. He yearns to fit in, but he seems to acknowledge that he will always be different from the other children. However, in his poem that is entitled “I Am,” he also expresses an understanding that all of the other children also struggle with their own feelings of inadequacy and feeling unaccepted in their own ways.

When Benjamin read his poem in front of his class, he immediately touched his teacher and fellow students on a deep, emotional level. In fact, his teacher was so moved by the poem that she shared it online and with the National Autism Association. The NAA has recognized the significance of this well-written work of art, and they have also taken the time to share it with others.
