Being in the right place at the right time was critical for one young boy back in May 2014. At that time, a boy by the name of Dorian Beshara, then 6 years old, had been visiting his grandmother at her home in Salem, New Hampshire. It was a nice day, and Dorian decided to look out the window at his grandmother’s house when he saw something.
Dorian had always been great pals with Dorothy Beal, his grandmother’s 84-year-old neighbor. He loved looking out the window that faced her house and would even wave to say hello at times. They had grown to become good friends, and seeing Beal was an added bonus for Dorian each time he visited his grandma.
One day when he was looking out the window, Dorian saw something horrific happen. Beal was outside near her birdbath and bent over. Suddenly, there was a loud crack. At that moment, she knew that she had seriously hurt her back. Thankfully, Dorian saw the elderly woman in trouble, and he immediately sprang into action.
He knew that he needed to help Beal and searched for his older family members, who were also at his grandmother’s house, to come to her rescue. The neighbor was quickly rushed to the hospital and given the care she needed before she began her lengthy recovery process. Fortunately, she had a great support system by her side, and now she refers to Dorian as one of her buddies. In August 2014, WCVB reported that Dorian and Beal had grown to become incredibly close following a scary incident back in May of that year. Dorian had seen the elderly woman bend over near her birdbath and hurt herself, followed by her instantly motioning for the 6-year-old to come over and help.
“I was looking to see if Dot Beal was in the front yard so I could say hi,” Dorian said. “I knew she broke something, so I called my dad and uncle and told them to go over.” The adults proceeded to help Beal back into her house and call the ambulance. She later found out she had broken her back.
It took a few months, but Beal fully recovered and is eternally grateful for her young friend. “He’s my little hero,” she said. “He saved my life.” Beal continued to rave about Dorian and said, “We are buddies. He watches out for me. He knocks on the door and comes to visit, and then he goes on his way.”
Dorian said that he helped Beal because he knew it was the right thing to do. “It makes me feel good thoughts,” he said. It was clear that many people were moved by the young boy’s actions. Joseph Beshara, Dorian’s father, called his son a hero and said, “Little kids can do so much more than they get credit for. I’m the proudest father ever.”
Rewarding him for his good deed, the Salem Fire Department decided to give the 6-year-old a private ride around the block in a fire engine, as per WCVB.
