Although greater awareness exists about the dangers of bullying, kids still get bullied at school. Their peers often lack the empathy necessary to curb bullying behavior. Sometimes, a teacher or another adult must step in to restore civility.

Such was the case in Sheboygan Falls, WI. In the town, a youngster found himself repeatedly harassed. The young boy, named William, wore a pink shirt on his first day at the school and was bullied for it. Setting a mature and leading example, his teacher Mr. Winter then showed up the next day wearing a pink shirt himself, and in the process taught William's bullies a lesson.

Why did his peers treat him so unkindly? The young man wore pink to school, and some classmates treated him disrespectfully because of it.

A young boy named William joined a fourth-grade class, and he wore a pink shirt on his first day. Classmates wondered why William wore a pink shirt. The young man replied honestly when he said he liked the color. Unfortunately, teasing soon followed as he received the label of "sissy."

The shirt, ironically, said, "Tough Guys Wear Pink." It turns out the shirt came from a breast cancer charity, and pink represents the ribbon color intended to raise awareness about cancer. The kids in class had no idea about the shirt's origins, but the teasing was inappropriate even if they did. A sad William went home and told his mom he didn't want to go back.

When he did go back, William found he had a new ally in his teacher, Mr. Winter. The teacher decided to wear a pink shirt in support of William. Mr. Winter even wore the shirt for an entire week.

Hopefully, the children learned from Mr. Winter's example. Making fun of a classmate is never acceptable, as everyone should feel welcome in class. Younger persons don't always know things like these, so an older person often must set an example. Mr. Winter was kind enough to show William that there was nothing wrong with his shirt color choice. And there assuredly is nothing wrong with trying to raise awareness about cancer. Hopefully, everyone in the class learned a valuable lesson here.

The lesson can extend to people far outside of the classroom. Telling the world about William's story could provide a lesson for young people and adults alike.
