Boy Battling Serious Heart Condition Turns Cute Hospital Takeout Reviews Into Unexpected Blessing

At just 8 years old, Dalton DeMicheli has faced more medical challenges than most people encounter in a lifetime. Born in July 2017 with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a rare congenital condition in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped, his life has been defined by resilience, medical complexity, and an extraordinary outlook.
Dalton underwent his first open-heart surgery at only six days old. Over the years, that number grew to six surgeries, including three within a single year due to complications. During that intense period, he spent 50 days in the hospital, 30 of them in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite the physical toll, his emotional strength stood out to everyone around him.
His mother, Krista DeMicheli, recalled the moment she learned about his condition during pregnancy as deeply unsettling in an interview with PEOPLE.
“You go into it not expecting to hear bad news,” she explained. “You have this picture of what your life’s gonna be like with your first child… and in that moment, everything was just put on pause.”
As Dalton grew, additional complications emerged, including protein-losing enteropathy, a rare disorder that prevents the body from retaining essential proteins. Faced with difficult choices, his parents opted for further surgery over a heart transplant, hoping to stabilize his condition.
Through it all, Dalton’s perspective has remained remarkably positive. “I just don't know anybody who could go through what Dalton has gone through and still be just so excited about life,” Krista shared.
Even during his longest hospital stays, Dalton found a way to create joy — not just for himself, but for others as well. Armed with a sense of humor and a love for food, he began filming playful takeout reviews from his hospital bed. What started as a simple distraction quickly turned into a source of comfort and connection.
“He always wanted to do the grand reveal,” Krista said, describing how Dalton would lift the lid off his meals and enthusiastically rate them. “(Dalton) would lift the lid… and say, okay, today I’m having eggs and french toast… and everything’s a 10 out of 10.”
One dish, however, stood above the rest: honey-seared chicken from Pei Wei Asian Kitchen. It became his go-to meal, ordered multiple times and eagerly anticipated during difficult days. More than just food, it represented a sense of normalcy during an otherwise overwhelming experience.
“It really brought a sense of normalcy into a really weird and scary time in our lives,” Krista explained. “It allowed us to just enjoy a good meal together… and it just started to become something that (Dalton) looked forward to.”
When Krista began sharing Dalton’s videos online, the response was immediate and heartfelt. Families facing similar diagnoses reached out, expressing gratitude and finding hope in his story. What began as a personal journal transformed into a wider movement of support.
Among those moved by Dalton’s story was Pei Wei itself. Inspired by his positivity, the company reached out with a care package and later organized a GoFundMe tied to his favorite dish. A portion of the proceeds from honey-seared chicken orders helps support Dalton’s ongoing medical needs.
For Krista, the experience underscored the power of community and storytelling.
“Social media is… such a powerful thing, and it could be used for such beautiful things,” she said. “When you use it for good things, so much good can come out of it.”
As of press time, Dalton continues to play baseball, spend time with his siblings, and share his food reviews — reminding everyone that even in the hardest circumstances, joy can still be found.
