Singer Jon Bon Jovi has developed a deep and lasting fan base over the years. His mellow pop tunes are catchy and memorable. This has helped push his work to the very top of the pop charts. People who know his work well are not surprised to learn the singer has another, equally warm and caring side.

Just like his fans, he understands that we are all one community and we should all do our best to care for each other even when times are hard. He wants to help make the world a better place through his music and through another passion of his, great food.

The recent government shutdown was very hard on many people all over the country. Many government workers, in particular, sudden found themselves facing all sorts of possible fiscal hardships.

People who had previously been paid for the work automatically were all of a sudden faced with the prospect of going to work and not getting a paycheck.

Like many Americans, those who work for the government need to budget carefully in order to meet their expenses. A single missed check can make a different between paying the bills and getting behind. It can also mean the difference between putting food on the table and doing without.

Given these circumstances, people around the nation felt compelled to see what they could do to help those in need. Many celebrities and elected officials began to think about what they could do to help people stay afloat financially during this time. Jon Bon Jovi was one of those celebrities rushing to help. He announced he would be serving meals to federal employees and those that rely on them for support free of charge on Monday afternoons.

In 2011, the singer decided he wanted to help provide something special to the community. That led to the founding of what became the popular and highly influential JBJ Soul Kitchen. JBJ Soul Kitchen is part of many joint charitable ventures with his beloved wife.

He and Dorothea began the idea of the restaurant as a place where people could go to enjoy a really good meal. At the same time, they didn't want it to be a traditional restaurant where the emphasis might be profit rather than people.

JBJ Soul Kitchen is a space that lets diners pay what they want. Twenty dollars is the suggested donation. The goal is to create a place that lets people who may not be able to afford a fabulous meal like this still have the joy of dining out in style. In addition to a meal, those who come here are also given other services if they need to have them.

People can come here to get access to help with job training and resources that are intended to offer the support they need in order to get back on their feet after a fiscal, medical or other personal problem. It's all about offering people what they need where they need it.

People who wish to participate in this venture can also earn the cost of their meal by engaging in meaningful volunteer activities. This allows people who want to give something back a means of doing so even if all they have to offer is their time.

Diners can also choose to help others by sharing the cost of their meals and paying for others to dine there. This venture is one of many charitable ventures that Bon Jovi and his wife have helped bring to life over the years.

He and his wife want to help families and individuals facing economic hardship. To the end, they have helped built over five hundred affordable housing units in nearly a dozen states. They work closely with people who may be homeless or be facing the possibility of losing their home.

The free meals at the restaurant are being offered as part of a partnership with current New Jersey governor Philip Murphy. Murphy and his wife Tammy have created the Murphy Family Foundation to help make sure that all those who live in New Jersey have access to important resources when they are in need.

Those federal employees who would like to participate are asked to bring their federal employment identification before entering the restaurant.
