Blind Rescue Dog Gets Eye Surgery And Looks At Owner For The First Time

Olive, a rescue dog from Los Angeles, was flown to Vancouver, British Columbia, where she was adopted by Holly and Bart Emmerson, a Canadian couple.

This is her story of how she went from having a minimal vision to having sight before going back to being blind again.

Canadian couple Holly and Bart Emmerson explained in their video that they wanted to adopt a pet. Their friend in Los Angeles told them about a black cocker spaniel who had been rescued from the city streets.

Holly and Bart were delighted — could this be their dog? Everyone agreed it was meant to be and their friend flew the pooch to Vancouver to complete Holly and Bart’s family. They named her Olive and it was love at first sight — or so they thought.

Olive was playful and loving but had severe cataracts in both eyes and could barely see. Holly and Bart were heartbroken. They took her to the vet and received some amazing news — Olive’s cataracts could be removed.

Holly and Bart were so nervous when Olive was wheeled off to surgery. Had they made the right decision? It wasn’t long before the vet called them with the good news — Olive was okay and the surgery had been a success. Thrilled, they rushed back to see Olive and, most importantly, for her to see them!

As soon as they arrived, the nurses brought out a groggy but happy Olive. She wagged her tail like never before. The nurses cheered and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Olive and her owners celebrated this miraculous moment.

Now it was up to Holly and Bart to show Olive what she had been missing. They knew she might easily be overwhelmed, so they took it slowly. Olive couldn’t believe all she saw. Trees and cars and water. She would pitter-patter up the street and stop dead in her tracks when she saw something new.

So much to take in for little Olive! Sometimes, it all became too much and she’d hide behind Holly. No wonder. The world is a big place. Eventually, though, Olive got used to having her new vision and was as happy as any puppy could be.

Olive had a remarkable few weeks of seeing the world. Sadly, though, she developed glaucoma and her owners were faced with a difficult reality. To save their precious dog from a life of pain, she must have her eyes removed and live the rest of her life in darkness. Heartbreaking as it was, they knew what they had to do.

The surgery went well. Holly and Bart were ready to face whatever challenges were ahead of them in order to accommodate Olive’s blindness and to make her happy. Days after the surgery, however, they realized they shouldn’t have worried.

Being blind again didn’t slow Olive down a bit. She played and loved just as she had before. Perhaps Olive’s experience is a lesson in gratitude.
