In a note posted on Friday to Boseman’s Twitter account, the actor’s family released a statement confirming the 43-year-old’s death.

“It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of our Chadwick Boseman,” the statement, posted alongside a photo of the actor, read.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family continued. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more - all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther."

Boseman, who attended Howard, a Historically Black University, was born in South Carolina. His first roles in the early 2000s — many of them minor — were for television shows like Law & Order, ER, and Lie to Me. But the actor’s hard work paid off in 2013 when director Brian Helgeland cast the young actor as Jackie Robinson in the biopic 42. From then on, Boseman continued starring in big-budget feature films like Tate Taylor’s James Brown biopic Get On Up.

But it wasn’t until Boseman’s role in Ryan Coogler’s Black Pantherthe first superhero movie ever to be nominated for an Oscar, that the actor reached widespread international recognition, catapulting the award-winning star onto the world stage as one of Hollywood’s most popular talents.

For his lead role in Black PantherBoseman won the Screen Actors Guild Award for best actor alongside the rest of the film’s cast. And over his entire career, the young actor won 10 awards and 30 nominations.

On Friday, following his family’s announcement of Boseman’s death, fellow actors, actresses, entertainment professionals, fans, politicians, and national organizations took to social media to remember Boseman and celebrate his accomplishments.

“For showing us how to conquer adversity with grace...For showing us how to ‘Say it Loud!’... For showing us how to walk as a King, without losing the common touch....For showing us just how powerful we are...Thank you #ChadwickBoseman,” the NAACP wrote on Instagram, honoring the actor’s legacy.

Captain America actor Chris Evans, who starred alongside Boseman in the Avengers films, also took to social media to remember his co-star and friend.

“I’m absolutely devastated. This is beyond heartbreaking,” Evans wrote on Twitter. “Chadwick was special. A true original. He was a deeply committed and constantly curious artist. He had so much amazing work still left to create. I’m endlessly grateful for our friendship.”

Boseman is survived by his wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, and a parent, according to the actor’s publicist.
