Have you ever gotten into an argument with someone over a world record? Or have you ever just been curious about who holds the record for a superlative? Most of us turn to a certain trusted source for that type of information. Guinness World Records, which was previously known as the Guinness Book of Records, has been around since 1955.

The idea for a book that compiled information like the world's fastest animal and the world's tallest person came after Hugh Beaver attended a shooting party where everyone argued over the fastest game bird in Europe. When they tried to look the answer up in reference books, nothing could be found. This gave Beaver, who was the Managing Director of the Guinness Brewery, an idea for a promotional book based on settling these arguments at pubs.

In 1954, Beaver hired two researchers, twin brothers Norris and Ross McWhirter, to compile a list of facts and figures. Later that year, the Guinness Superlatives was incorporated and opened a tiny office on Fleet Street. Writing the book took 13 and a half 90-hour work weeks to complete. This included weekends and bank holidays, which shows how dedicated everyone was to the project.

The book would go on to become an all-time bestseller and trusted brand. The name of the company changed in 1999, and now Guinness World Records are used to settle arguments and fascinate readers all over the world. Here we take a look at some of the lesser-known records out there, like the world's longest fingernails, longest dog tongue and more.

Longest Finger Nails

Lee Redmond holds the record for the world's longest fingernails after spending 30 years nurturing their growth. She uses her title to spread positive messages. Redmond shared, "One of the greatest things that I have done with them is going around to the junior high schools and talking about self-esteem. I go to self-esteem classes and tell the kids, 'It's OK to be different, as long as you are not hurting anyone.'"

Most Pierced Woman

The somewhat curious title of "Most Pierced Woman" goes to Elaine Davidson, a former nurse born in Brazil and now living in Edinburgh, Scotland. She received the title in 2000 when she was found to have a whopping 462 piercings on her body, 162 of which were on her face alone! She has kept adding to her collection constantly and, as of 2009, was recorded to have over 6,000 piercings - some of which she has had added internally. Talk about dedication!

Longest Mustache

The man with the longest mustache in the world is Ram Singh Chauhan from India. His mustache measured 4.29 meters (which is more than 14 feet) in 2010. The upkeep of so much hair keeps Chauhan busy. "I massage it and oil it regularly and I wash it every 10 days which takes a long time," he said.

Longest Tongue on a Dog

The dog with the longest tongue was a St. Bernard named Mochi. Sadly, Mochi passed away in 2021. Mochi held the record for five years and her tongue measured 7.3 inches long. Her owners said of her, "Mochi had an impact on nearly everyone she met. She rescued so many hearts in her life."
