The legendary Steve Irwin would have been 57 on February 22. Known as the "Crocodile Hunter," Irwin tragically passed away in September of 2006 after being attacked by a stingray while filming a piece for his daughter's television program.
Family and fans of Irwin did not let his latest birthday slip by without recognition. Even Google got into the act, producing a special commemorative video. Steve's wife, Terri, wrote a touching blog post for Google. Terri used this platform to detail their early life together, fondly recalling the legacy of wildlife conversation that Steve left to the world.
“Today’s Google Doodle acknowledges the life and achievements of my husband Steve Irwin, whose efforts to protect wildlife and wild places have been recognised as the most extensive of any conservationist,” she wrote. “We are so proud that his legacy lives on, as that was his greatest wish. He once said, ‘I don’t care if I’m remembered, as long as my message is remembered.'”

It is no wonder that Steve grew up to have the career that he did. After growing up at his family's reptile park, Steve cultivated an appreciation and love for wildlife. After visiting the Beerwah Reptile Park, Terri fell in love with Steve and his commitment to help endangered animals.
“Steve and I married in June 1992 in my grandmother’s church in Eugene, Oregon,” Terri continued in the blog post. “Afterward, we received a phone call about a poacher trying to kill a large crocodile in North Queensland, so instead of a honeymoon, Steve and I went to Australia to save the croc before the bad guys got him.
“We invited a film crew to come along and document our efforts. Although we didn’t arrive in time to save the crocodile, we did save his mate.”
Terri recalls the story of an aborted honeymoon that was instead spent rescuing a crocodile in North Queensland from poachers. It was this adventure that eventually led to the start of the popular show, "The Crocodile Hunter."
Not surprisingly, the Irwin children have followed in the footsteps of their parents. Steve's daughter Bindi shared a precious photo of the two of them on the day of his birthday. The adorable picture shows Bindi as a toddler in her father's arms alongside a koala bear. She captioned the photo by saying,'Thank you for always being my guiding light.'
Steve would clearly be proud of his family's efforts to continue his legacy of advocating for animals.
