Bindi Irwin Accused Grandfather, Bob Irwin, Of Mental Abuse Since She Was A "Little Girl"

Bindi Irwin has left shocking claims that her grandfather, Bob Irwin, father of Steve Irwin, has been estranged from her for all her life and has caused her mental abuse. Bindi uploaded a Father's Day post on June 20, 2021, that paid tribute to Steve, her husband Chandler Powell and her father-in-law, Chris Powell. When she was asked as to why she excluded her grandfather, she left a long and explosive post about the current state of her relationship with Bob. 

Bob is essentially responsible for the way the Irwin family name is synonymous with Australia’s wildlife conservation efforts. He always had a passion for wildlife conservation and made time for it while he was working as a plumber. He moved his family to Queensland, Australia, where his part-time passion turned professional when he designed and built the Beerwah Reptile Park on the Sunshine Coast. This would eventually become the Australia Zoo that people know and have come to love today. 

Bindi's claims reportedly left Bob "shocked to his core" and have led to other members of the Irwin family speaking out on his behalf. 7 News Australia reported that the feud between Bob and his late son's family goes way back, though it has not been so publicly exposed before. Allegedly, there were already rumors of a feud between Bob and Terri Irwin in the months following Steve’s passing in 2006, and Bob left Australia Zoo.

However, the feud has been ripped open now with Bindi's claims, and has led to allegations on both sides of the family. 

In the Father's Day post that Bindi uploaded onto Facebook, one user questioned Bindi as to why her grandfather was not included. Her response exposed the ongoing feud between the family that the late Steve left behind and his father.

7 News Australia reported that Bindi wished that her entire family could spend time with her daughter, grace, and wrote, "Unfortunately my grandfather Bob has shown no interest in spending time with me or my family." She added, "From the time I was a little girl he has ignored me, preferring to spend time doing anything else rather than being with me."

She continued, "He has returned gifts I've sent him after he opened them, he has ignored my correspondence and from the time I was a little girl he has ignored me, preferring to spend time doing anything else rather than being with me," adding, "He has never said a single kind word to me personally. It breaks my heart but it is not healthy to engage in an abusive relationship."

She urged people to "remember to be kind to one another but most of all care for your own mental health. She ended her post by saying, "I have struggled with this relationship my entire life and it brings me enormous pain. I have to choose to care for my own mental health now." 

In the post, Bindi also explained that her family continues to support Bob financially and that Terri continues to send him birthday and Christmas gifts that still have no response. She wished her grandfather happiness in his life, but she no longer wanted to be part of his life anymore. Her claims have been met with a lot of support from her followers, but Bob's family has spoken out and slammed Bindi.

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford told Australian news outlet Sunrise on Monday that he had attempted to call Bob to ask him for comment and ended up inadvertently breaking the news to Bob's wife, Judy. He said, "They’re not on social media, so they were not aware of what was going on," and added, "When I rang and read to Judy his wife the details of what was said I think they were pretty shocked and devastated, that’s just the feeling I got, they didn’t say that to me." Judy and Bob reportedly did not "want to offer any kind of reply or response" to the allegations. 

7 News Australia reported that Bob's granddaughter Toni Johnstone said the allegations were “far from the truth." She added, "Poppy is the most caring, loving, beautiful soul and I am so incredibly lucky to have him as my grandfather. The fact that Bindi could write such horrible things about him and think that anyone would believe them just puzzles me." 

Steve's sister Mandy also chimed in and said, "Dad is the most amazing father, grandfather and great grandfather. He has taught me so much in life in general and how to respect all creatures great and small. He always said to watch out for humans they’re the ones that can be nasty."

Another granddaughter, Bethany Wheeler said, "My sisters and brothers will happily back me up when I say that Bob Irwin is a passive and beautiful human and these lies need to stop." Wheeler also slammed Bindi by saying that she "used her power of following and name to say some very bold and damaging statements." 

Bindi has since announced that she is taking a break from social media.
