As one of the most legendary performers of his time, Billy Joel has amassed a loyal and massive following of fans. However, somebody extra special to Joel stole the stage from him at a 2019 performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City — his then 3-year-old daughter Della Rose.

Dressed in an adorable outfit, sweet Della Rose commanded quite the audience when she joined her dad on stage to sing his hit song "Don't Ask Me Why."

The 3-year-old was not able to get any of the lyrics out on account of her stage fright, but her sweet foot-tapping seemed to have won the crowd over. Joel had previously shared a video of Della Rose singing along with the tune.

This concert was truly a family affair. Joel's older daughter, Alexa Ray, also joined her father on stage as the two sang "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." The audience was clearly delighted with both of these bonus performances.

Joel is a classic performer. Although his vocals are clearly amazing, he is most famous for his exceptional piano playing skills. Some of his most beloved songs include "Piano Man," "She's Got A Way," "My Life," "Just The Way You Are" and "Uptown Girl."

Generations of people have grown up listening to Joel's music, making him a true national treasure. His fans are delighted that he continues to tour and share his special brand of entertainment.

But how did Joel, a young boy from the Bronx in New York City, make it to where he is today?

Joel’s success story and thirst for music began at a young age — just as it might for his two younger daughters. From early on, the singer-songwriter was exposed to music thanks to his parents, according to Biography.com. His father was an accomplished classical pianist; however, it was Joel’s mother who encouraged the young boy to begin piano lessons at the age of 4. And as it is with many musical stars, Joel showed promise from the get-go. In his teenage years, Joel dropped out of high school to focus on music, having already joined multiple bands in his short career.

The young man’s early success paid off — he was offered a contract with Family Productions for his first album, as Biography.com details. But as most Joel fans know, the singer-songwriter’s first album, “Cold Spring Harbor,” was a flop, failing both critically and commercially.

“So, I’m gonna have this big party, right. And all my friends come over, and this is my first album, and we’re gonna have this listening party,” Joel explained during an audience Question and Answer session in 1996. “And my friends are listening, going, ‘Wow, you sound like a girl!’ And I was, like, furious. I took the (album) and I threw it like a Frisbee.”

Following “Cold Spring Harbor’s” disappointing release, Joel moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a lounge pianist at venues like The Executive Room under the pseudonym Bill Martin. It was around this time that Joel caught another break. Someone on the East Coast had released an unofficial recording of the singer’s track “Captain Jack,” which quickly gained traction and attracted the attention of the well-known label Columbia Records, as Biography.com reports.

Just two years later, Joel came out with “Piano Man,” which climbed the charts as a single, and “Streetlife Serenade,” his breakthrough album.

“I was living in LA and trying to get out of a bad record contract I'd signed,” Joel told Metro in 2006, speaking to his early career success. “I worked under an assumed name, the Piano Stylings of Bill Martin, and just bulls**ted my way through it. I have no idea why (“Piano Man”) became so popular. It's like a karaoke favorite. The melody is not very good and very repetitious, while the lyrics are like limericks. I was shocked and embarrassed when it became a hit. But my songs are like my kids, and I look at that song and think: 'My kid did pretty well.'"

Since those early days, Joel has released a total of 12 studio albums, won a number of awards and had three children. But like his musical career, Joel’s personal life hasn’t been that simple, and he’s had to deal with a fair amount of heartbreak.

Joel’s first prominent relationship was with Elizabeth Weber Small who was married to Joel’s musical partner, Jon Small. Initially, the two had an affair, which eventually led to Elizabeth cutting contact with both men. However, Joel and Elizabeth reconnected and got married in 1973. Around nine years later, the marriage ended in divorce.

Since then, Joel has married a second, third and fourth time. For his second marriage, the singer famously tied the knot in 1985 with Christie Brinkley, a model.

Shortly thereafter, Brinkley gave birth to Joel’s first child, Alexa Ray Joel. Like Joel’s first marriage, Brinkley and the singer lasted around 9 years before splitting. Around that time, Joel took a break from marriage — until 2004 when Joel married Katie Lee, a food critic and cookbook author.

It wasn’t until 2015, Joel’s fourth marriage, that the singer seems to have settled down with Alexis Roderick and their two children, Della Rose and Remy Anne.

And it’s in this video that you can witness the singer’s connection with his daughter, which prompted a number of heartwarming comments from viewers.

“One more little comment: I have watched this video a few times - so darn adorable!” a user named Cindy wrote on YouTube. “Can you imagine what a treasure this video will be when little Della Rose grows up and figures out what a legend her daddy is? One of the best artists in history! I am from the '70s! Love you Billy Joel!!!!”

“When I was celebrating my 16th birthday at the Boston Garden with my friends we had birds-eye view tickets,” Diana Pythia added in the comments. “Billy Joel gave us front row seats! Full of Heart! I'm glad he has a little one to make dreams come true for now!”

After years of repeated divorce, it seems that Joel has finally found his way as a dad and family man — and it shows in this video.

“I’m a homebody now,” Joel said in a 2018 interview with The New York Times. “When they start school full-time, somebody’s got to drive them there. I didn’t have a dad — he wasn’t around. Being a father is very important to me. I want to make sure I leave my imprint with them."
