Bill Murray returns to Groundhog Day in a minute-long Super Bowl commercial that was premiered earlier today. The Super Bowl game happens to fall on Groundhog Day 2020. This is Murray’s first-ever nationally devised commercial.

In the Jeep ad, Murray’s Groundhog Day film character Phil Connors is once again trapped in a time loop and is forced to repeatedly relive the same encounters and the same day over and over again - the only difference is the Jeep of course.

Murray wakes up eagerly every morning at 6.00 AM just like Phil to Sonny & Cher's 'I Got You Babe' on the clock radio.

When he wakes up, at first he is taken back by the deja vu. But then he steps out and takes the Gladiator as his getaway vehicle instead of the Chevrolet C-10 pickup that was featured in the film. Murray and his groundhog cruise through different adventures each day on their new vehicle.

It marks the first time in 54 years that the Super Bowl and Groundhog Day fall on the same day.

Fiat Chrysler Chief Marketing Officer Olivier Francois said that once they realized this, getting Murray to sign on was crucial to the ad.

Francois told CNBC:

“What is incredible here is that obviously we got Bill Murray to say yes to do it. This is totally a miracle. It’s the same kind of miracle having Super Bowl Sunday falling on Groundhog Day.”

The ad was filmed in Woodstock, Illinois, the same location as the movie. It also has appearances by Murray's brother, Brian Doyle-Murray, who played the Mayor of the city of Punxsutawney and Stephen Tobolowsky as 'Needlenose Ned' Ryerson.
