American royalty John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette tragically perished in a plane crash over Martha’s Vineyard twenty years ago. The two iconic cultural figures were wed just three years prior at a secret wedding successfully hidden from the public and the press. Only an intimate circle of friends and family that were present that day witnessed their vows and ceremony...until now. JFK Jr.’s best friend Billy Noonan has decided to release footage that he filmed at their day, which will be a part of an upcoming TLC special on the couple.

As the son of one of the most beloved U.S. presidents ever, JFK Jr.’s life was constantly under scrutiny. And when a big day like his wedding was to occur there would be no doubt that prying eyes would want to get every detail. His beautiful bride was Carolyn Bessette, a woman who would be hounded day and night by the press being one half of the dynamic and brilliant duo.

To enjoy their special day with each other and get out of the spotlight for once, John and Carolyn decided to have a secret wedding on September 21, 1996, at a small church on Cumberland Island, Georgia, ET reports. The unannounced wedding was filmed not by a professional crew that could leak the tape, but by JFK Jr.’s best friend Billy Noonan. Billy has decided only recently to show the world what he filmed in that little island church all those years ago.

The footage shows glimpses of the wedding set-up including some of the bridal party arriving by truck. The sweet moments between the bride and groom were captured including John’s special toast to his new wife. “Carolyn has changed my life in a way that I never thought was possible,” he says to the guests in the tape. “And [she] just made me tonight, the happiest man alive.” The footage will air on the two-hour TLC special entitled “JFK Jr. and Carolyn’s Wedding: The Lost Tapes.”
